iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation thinks iPhone Charger is iTunes!

We gave my Mother in law an iPod 2nd Gen for christmas a few years back, and it worked find. Now, she says that it wont charge, so I took a look at it.

If i plug it into a PC it charges fine. If iTunes is installed it does the orange LED flashing while it syncs and everything is cool. However if I plug it into an iPhone charger, then the LED starts flashing orange, like its synching to iTunes! (it doesn't appear to charge in this state)

I am yet to test it with a plain USB charger, though an HTC Desire HD charger exhibited the same symptoms.

I know the iPhone chargers use the data lines to switch the charging current and do some product detection magic, however, I can't understand why the iPod would think it's connected to iTunes when it's an iPhone charger - any ideas?

will update when i test again

cheers

Hello ,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

To charge the iPod, please use the proper power adapter and cable that came with the device.

For iPod shuffle (2nd generation)

To charge the battery using your computer:

  1. Connect the iPod shuffle dock's USB connector into a high-power USB port on your computer.
Note: To charge a iPod shuffle battery, connect the device to a high-power USB port. Please be aware that USB keyboards and non-powered USB hubs generally do not have high-power USB ports. If you connect to a low or non-powered port, iPod shuffle will not charge.
  2. The computer must be turned on and set to not go to sleep.
  3. Insert the iPod shuffle into the dock.
  4. Verify the iPod shuffle is seated securely in the dock.

Once the iPod shuffle is plugged in, it will take about 2 hours to charge the battery to 80% capacity and about 4 hours to charge it to 100%. Find out how to check the battery charge here.
