iPhone 5 FaceTime Image Focus Problems

When trying to FaceTime with my iPhone 5, the rear camera continually moves from focus to out-of-focus. It's driving the folks I'm FaceTiming with absolutely mad because the picture moves from blurry to clear almost constantly. Any ideas on a solution?

What makes this more frustrating is that I had to replace my first iPhone 5 after only 15 months because the rear camera couldn't auto-focus anymore (a well-documented problem), and I had to pay for a replacement phone. Now after only 5 months with the replacement iPhone 5 I received from Apple it seems like I'm having more issues with the rear camera.

Hey there imjeb2u,

It sounds like your rear camera keeps refocusing causing the image to be unreliable. I would use these troubleshooting steps from the following article to help resolve the issue:

iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality

  1. ...force quit the Camera app.
  2. Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
  3. Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
  4. Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
  5. Try to remain steady while focusing:
    • Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
    • Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
  6. If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
