No, it will blow up your TC. They are poorest quality power supplies ever.. it is not sufficient rated to run anything. The 2A on each voltage is a total joke.

I put the warning on my website. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair

Please note these warnings.

1. Do not use cheap Chinese power supplies for external hard disks.. they are 2A 12v and 2A 5v.. they are poor.. and will blow up. DO NOT USE THEM.. DO NOT BUY THEM.. It will possibly take out your TC and/or hard disk.. they did for the first repair I did using it. You will also notice if you use ADSL that they produce so much RF that your adsl will stop or sync much slower. They have no filter components.

2. The internal power supply is charged on the primary.. do not unwrap it.. do not touch live parts naturally but just because it is disconnected doesn't mean the capacitors discharge.. in this case they don't.. later ones installed bleed resistors.

3. The instructions for opening the TC should be followed.. A good set here. http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule I will not repeat them. Take note of the Step 3.. when you lift the aluminium base do not apply pressure.. or lift it straight up.. the fan is plugged into the board with a really easily damaged socket that is merely soldered as surface mount. There are no pins through the board.. you will rip the socket right off the board.. I use a pair of tweezers and very carefully wiggle the plug out of the socket. Use the tweezers to hold the socket onto the board..

If you want to do this follow the instructions in my website.

I have shown several methods of repair.

How do I know if it's the power supply or not?

Because it always is.. the power supplies in these are poor.. the TC is overhot and will destroy the power supply.

The boards in gen1 and gen2 are very solid.. hardly seen any with issues.

Also is there any reason I can't put a bigger drive in it while it's apart?

You can put a larger drive. but note the discussion above.. the larger green drives might use less current in standby and during operation but they have heavy demand on spin up.. exceeding the rating of even the best of the 30W supplies and stressing the 34W once it is old and worn.

Either use a different supply, eg external 12 with internal converter.. such as I show in the website.. or even better buy a Gen3 TC second hand.

Your Gen2 TC is slow.. the next version fixed a lot of issues with overheating and fixed the power supply.

The Gen3 has a 50% faster CPU and hence gets 50% faster speed over ethernet to the hard disk.. they are processor bound. Wireless is also improved although disk speed over wireless is wireless bound.

There is no hassle installing a bigger drive.. 2 or 3TB go in fine.. but the power supply is still an issue and heat is a big issue.

I destroyed the rubber on the bottom of it, so if I leave it off that may produce more air flow. I've also seen some guys cut a hole in the bottom for the fan and I may do this as well as lift it off the shelf a bit for more air!!

You seem to be savvy with these. Would this power supply work? The specs are different but states it would work with generation 2!

My model is the A1302

Thanks!

Yes, the 1500uF 6.3v capacitors have leaked.. but there are 4 dead caps in the secondary.

It is all in the repair instructions if you want to try yourself .. you can buy a set of caps from ebay for $20.

The one you found on Amazon is for a gen1.. it will work fine in a Gen2 as long as you do not use a bigger hard drive.. you need the 34W supply for the bigger drives.

I can put a 2 or 3 TB drive with the same power supply it had in it?? Right now, I just want to fix it, if I can find someone to send me a power supply for a good price!

Yes, and no.. I do not think any used supply will last long with a big hard disk.. I have seen them die after a few weeks.

Plenty of cheap supplies on ebay.. but some are used and not repaired.. they still need a set of caps.

If you are in Australia I repair them but elsewhere it is too expensive.. look for a local supplier or ebay from Hong Kong etc.

I'm not sure how you could tell, I suppose you have a trained eye!! Can you sell me a power supply?

I found this 34W one on Amazon too!

I was also going to leave the rubber mat off to allow more airflow (good idea??) I was also going to drill a hole for the fan and allow more air floe (good idea?)

I have repaired myself about 100 of them and replaced another few dozen and sent capacitors for another 100.. you get to know the signs. 😝

Yes.. see the instructions here.

And here.

Please note the rubber mat provides insulation due to the fact that the TC is directly AC powered.. It is not strictly safe to pull off the mat unless you power it from low voltage DC.

The supply from Amazon .. hard to predict .. it is refurbished so it all depends on how well they fixed it.. if they used first grade caps it should be ok.

Look on my website.. or profile here for email address and we can discuss purchase.. but I cannot beat the prices from HK.

Sorry I have never changed the supply in one of these units. One day somebody will but it has not happened to this point.

If you have data on the TC you want recovered, please just remove the hard disk.. put it in a holder (USB type is easiest) and plug it directly to your computer. You can get whatever info you want that way.

The internal power supply can probably be replaced with an external supply standard 12v.. but I don't know what the secondary output or input to / from the board is. Marked TS+ and TS- on the boards I can see.

I could reverse engineer it if I got hold of one.
