I have an iMac with a virus that has locked the browser. Avast has failed to eliminate it. There are 624 file it can't scan. Any ideas

I Have an iMac computer with a virus that has locked the browser. Avast virus scan was unable to clear up the problem and says that there are624 files it can't scan I am able to use other accounts on the same computer. The hacker is demanding $1,000.00 to unlock my browser! Anyone with ideas?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

This is a wide spread scam that takes over browsers.

It is a javascript that will automatically link to the site

and lock you up.


One thing that works, is to close the browser (via force quit

from the Finder), disconnect your computer from any network

that has access to the internet.


You can then be able to reopen the browser and delete the

window or tab displaying this ominous message. After doing this

reset the browser, clear all caches and cookies. Then, get back on

line and report to the webmaster of the site that linked you to

this malicious site,
