Internal speakers do not work. They have disappeared as an output option on sound preferences.

The internal speakers in my MacBook Pro do not work. I went to System Preferences/Sound/Output and there are no Internal Speakers listed as an option to select. They used to work (and I assume they used to be listed as an available output device. Any suggestions. I have been on hold with Apple Care now for 43 minutes.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Wait until you hear from AppleCare.

If that doesn't help, go step by step and test.

1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers

Highlight Internal Speakers / Headphones

Make sure that Mute is not enabled.

2.Plug in and remove the headphone.

If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.

Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Try this even if you don’t see the red light.

3. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222

4. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

Audio Devices window

Side Bar

Click the Built-in Output.

Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so,uncheck it.

7. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects

Play sound effects through:

Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".

Nothing listed here solved my issue.

I had the same issue with my MacBook Pro. Specifically there was no way to set my audio output to anything other than Digital Device. 'Internal Speakers' was no longer showing up under my output devices.

Fixed it by using compressed air to clean out dust/debris inside the headphone port. Apparently there’s an internal sensor in the port that will prevent the internal output from functioning if it’s too dirty.

Those of you who fixed this issue by plugging the headphone jack in the port multiple times and/or moving it around my be coincidentally solving the issue by moving the dust/debris off the sensor but I would still recommend a good cleaning with compressed air.

Internal speakers do not work. They have disappeared as an output option on sound preferences.
