Old version of Aperture no longer working after Mac OSX update

I have an old version of Aperture (3.1.2) that no longer works on my mac following my update to OSX (10.9.4). I would like to update my Aperture version so that its compatible with OSX but am unable to do so. All the aperture downloads tell me I have to update through the App Store but the App Store does not recognize that I have a valid, if outdated, version of Aperture on my computer and wants me to buy the software again. Is there a way to update Aperture (for free) and keep my library of photos? Thank you

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

If you cannot download the current version via your Purchases page in App Store, then it means the new version was not a free upgrade.

You should be able to upgrade Aperture 3.1.2 from the App Store for free. This update will convert your registration number license to an AppStore license. Check, if you are seeing Aperture on the "Purchased" tab of the App Store in the "Accept" portion of the screen. If it is there, accept it. Aperture should then be available for update on the "Update" tab of the AppStore.

Make sure , Aperture is installed in the Applications folder and simply called Aperture, so the AppStore will find it in Spotlight.

If the App Store still does not show the update, try first to update to Aperture 3.4.5 from the Apple Support Downloads page. This will enable you to run Aperture again and to enter your registration information and serial number. Then try again.

When Aperture 3.5.1 came out, there was a weird glitch, that the update only worked for English speaking regions. if all fails, try the download again and after setting your primary language to "English" in the System preferences.

All updates for version 3 should be free.

Generally, yes. The problem is the last update to Aperture 3.5.1, that converts non-App Store licences to AppStore licences.

If you installed a retail version of Aperture 3 on two computers on accounts with different Apple IDs, you will have a problem on one of the accounts, unless you switch the AppleID, delete your current Aperture, and download the App Store version with the converted licence. You cannot update the installed version, you have to reinstall it from the AppStore using the first AppleID.

I have had Aperture 3 from a DVD, on up to 3 different Macs and have never experienced any issues related to the use of the App Store when doing updates.

Your retail licence only covered installation on two macs 😀.

The problem I referred to occurs, when one of the macs is using a different Apple ID. You probably have been using the same Apple ID on all three macs. I use a different AppleID on the two macs that I am using at the university, than on my private macs, but had used the same Aperture installer on all macs. I had to reinstall using the installers with the university licence to be able to upgrade on my university macs to version 3.5.1.

There's nothing in the packaging that specifies a limit of two.

You must have missed this then (from the booklet included in the DVD box set, a copy of which is here http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/aperture.pdf )

How Apple was never very energetic in enforcing this and the only time I had any problems is if I had mote then two systems on the same network with the same license key. But even then there was only a warning, it didn't prevent you from running.

That document refers to the App Store licence of Aperture, not to the licence that came with the boxed retail versions. The retail licence restricted the use to two computers, but has one big advantage: You own Aperture and are allowed to sell it. The new, changed App Store licence, after you upgraded to Aperture 3.5.1, only grants you the use of Aperture on all computers you own or control for private purposes, but you do no longer own Aperture and you cannot sell it or transfer the rights to use it. I am not sure, which licence is better.

Added: Your photo of the content of the Aperture 3 box is missing the small print. In my box was a booklet with the licence, and the registration number was sticked to this booklet.

Those were the booklets that came with it:

Aperture 3, Take your photos to new places. (4 pages)

Aperture 3, Exploring Aperture. (160 pages)

Aperture 3, Installing Your Software (7 pages) The serial numbers were on the back of this book.

Just saying......

There was no additional small print in the box. Note that my box is for an Aperture 3 Upgrade, if that makes a difference.

In my box was a booklet with the licence, and the registration number was sticked to this booklet.

In my box the numbers were on the back of the Installation guide and it contained no licensing info:

User uploaded file

And, it's pretty much the same thing with the paperwork supplied in my Aperture 2 DVD box too.

Just saying....
