Although program starts receiving mails (usually 2 mails) the process doesn't proceed and activity goes down to 0.2 KB/sec without any further effect. Program seems to be frozen. Ending program and restarting means that I receive the same two mails again.

Hi, sounds like possibly a malformed email.
Use a browser to login via WebMail, see if you can read them if needed & delete them.
See if Mail can then receive mail.
Problem does only turn up on my ibook (10.5.8). No such problem on my imac (10.9.4) . No problem via webmail.
What/when was the last eMail the iBook received?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the exact message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
