For the 95 yr old WW2 Vet I take care of, what specifically do I need to purchase to hook up a 15-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro to a Sanyo LCD HDMI TV? He wants to access the internet through his new flat screen!

As this isn't my territory, I need an answer for dummies 😕 Any links you can provide will be much appreciated! Thank you.

Since the Sanyo has HDMI, and there is a mini Display Port, you can use a miniDP-to-HDMI which will carry both Audio and Video.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and (15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009) - Technical Specifications

Graphics and video support

  • All models: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
  • Selected models: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.66GHz configuration; or 512MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.8GHz and 3.06GHz configurations
  • Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
  • Built-in iSight camera
  • Mini DisplayPort

This is what you can use

Hooked up the Macbook pro to the Sanyo Flat Screen using the chord recommended but am unable to get any sound through the television - specifically trying to access Detroit Symphony Orchestra You Tube Videos to play for him on the television. I am uncertain as to which sound settings I should select on the Sanyo TV or if that's even related to the lack of sound:

Digital Audio Output choices are RAW, PCM and OFF

ARC/CEC setting options are OFF or ON

Do these settings have any impact on what I'm trying to accomplish anyway?

What should I try next? THANK YOU!

Signed,

Clueless 🙂

1. Does the Mac detect the Sanyo as a Display? You can check in System Preferences -> Displays?

2. Can you connect the HDMI end of the cable from the Mac to HDMI3 of the TV? Please check if the Mac detects the Display?

3. If the Display is detected, it should also detect the Sanyo as a Sound Output device.

4. Page 15 of http://sanyotv.com/Portals/0/Manuals/FVD3924/Manual%20FVD3924_English.pdf has the TV screen where you can check if the TV detects the Mac or not.

5. On the Mac click on About This Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> Graphics and Displays and click on each line to see if the Sanyo TV is listed. See this example http://imgur.com/Q7aIC6S. You can see a similar status in About This Mac -> Displays.

Do you see HDMI/DisplayPort Output in the Audio section?

For the short-term if there is not audio from TV speakers, you can leave the Mac audio on. You may also want to consider a separate Optical Audio cable like http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1556&se q=1&format=2 . The thinner end goes to the Mac and the regular bigger end goes to the TV.

From MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and (15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009) - Technical Specifications there is no mention of the DP outputting sound.

Audio

  • Built-in stereo speakers
  • Built-in omnidirectional microphone (located under left speaker grille)
  • Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)
  • Combined optical digital audio output/audio line out (minijack)

The following is an alternative method...

Sound

System Preferences > Sound. There are 3 tabs in the window; Sound Effects, Output and Input. Be sure you are on the Sound Effects tab. Middle of the window select your TV where it says "Play sound effects through:".

Select the middle tab named Output.

Select your TV from the drop-down list next to HDMI, below where it says "Select a device for sound output".

Using either Finder or Launchpad go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

On the left-hand side of the window you should now see HDMI. In the middle of the window, on the Output tab, where it says "Source:" select your TV from the drop-down list.

This last action below is NOT described in the iWires notes but was required in my case, it may also be required in yours. If you CANNOT see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list on the left, do the following:

Bottom left of the window select the wheel icon with the down-pointing triangle. Make sure that sound output is selected and that you can now see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list of devices.

If you still cannot hear sound, log out of your account and then log back in.
