Error message when installing updates. "There was an error in the App store. Please try again later" (20)

Even though you are just updating your apps, verify your payment method.

From the App Store menu bar click Store > View My Account then click Edit to the right of: Payment Type

If you have account on file that requries a security code, type that in if not available then click Done.

Then try your updates.

Hi, I have been having this problem too. I just tried Carolyn's suggestion and after clicking View My Account nothing happened.

The only thing that happened is that I was asked for the password for my apple id, which I entered, and then nothing happened.

I had the very same problem and your suggestion solved it. However, I'm rather dissatisfied with this. Why do I need to provide my card's security code in order to get a free update? Isn't this even illegal? Is there a way to avoid providing valid payment details and yet to get the free updates?

Okay, so perhaps I can ask differently: If I had changed my payment details to None, would that also have solved the problem?

I had this exact error message as well. Yesterday I changed my password via the Apple website. Turns out I just had to launch the App Store application, choose "Sign Out" from the "Store" menu. Then, I went to update my apps and was prompted to log in again. Once I logged back in, the updates worked. Hope this helps someone :-)

Thank you Catherine & MrToaster - Yes - I've just updated to my new credit card. All the details were correct, inc authorisation code but App Store kept prompting me to update iMovie then, not allowing me to (There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (20)).

Your advice worked - I logged out and in again.

The problem is that I'll definitely have forgotten your tip when my card next expires!

Nothing happened to me neither but then...

I switched payment method to NONE

then back to credit card - I (re) entered card details and voila.. it worked!

Thanks a lot. My problem wasn't credit card related and I never would have thought of logging out of and back in to the App Store to resolve the problem but just as MrToaster writes it was all I needed to do. It worked out wonderfully. Thanks again.
