Disk Utility

I keep getting the message that my Back Up failed through Time Machine

In searching the web I was told to Verify my Disk Utility & then repair

NOW I'm getting an error when I try to Repair the Disk that reads "Error: Live file system repair is not supported"

What does this mean & how can I get my files to Back Up?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Email attachments are now embedded?

Use Command+R or Command-Opt-R and run Disk Utility Verify (and Repair if necessary)?

Please see Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs as well.
