Q: MacBook Pro Slow bootup

Hi There.

I suffered some grief with my 17" MBP and after lots of work fixed everything except I was left with a boot up time of about 2 mins.  I have just bought a brand new 15" MBP top spec.  I had figured it was a problem in the OS that was causing the slow boot up so I migrated my old home folder to my new MBP.  And yes, it brought the problem with it.

I erased the new MBP and reloaded the OS and did another migrate  but without the Settings option.  It still had the slow bootup

I just can't figure out what it could be and i would be much happier if my spanking new MBP did not take ages to boot.

Is it possible to copy over applications, music photos etc from a hard drive to the new mac bit by bit to find the problem?

Hope for some help.

Phil.

Create a new Admin user account on the computer. Make it your auto-login account. Restart the computer to startup in the new user account. Has the problem ceased?

    Hi Kappy.

I created a new Admin User and set it as my auto login.  The problem remained on startup.  After about 2 mins of the grey screen with apple logo and the spinning gear it logged into the new account.  What was interesting is then logging out of the new account and back into my old account was instant!  So it is something in the general boot up before user login!

I have also tried this on my older 17" MBP where the problem started.   Could it be in the applications do you think as these are common to all users and were brought over in the migration?

OK. Next I want you to try Safe Mode then restart normally. If the problem is not in your Home folder, then it is associated with something in the overall system. See if the above makes any improvement.

Do you happen to have a lot of Login Items?

    Hi Kappy

I actually tried the safe mode boot up just now.  Booting in safe mode works as expected, quite slow to work its way through.  After it had booted I selected restart from the drop down.  It took a while to shut down but then when it rebooted it started up very quickly!!  I got very excited but when I restarted it again the problem was back!    I don't have many login items

Download and install the free utility, EtreCheck 1.9.15. Run it then copy the results and paste them into a reply here.

Rid your MBP of Mackeeper.  It is the ebola of so called 'performance apps'.

Hi Kappy.  I hope you are still there and are able to check EtreCheck report.  It occurred to me that the only other thing I have done some time ago when trying to sort other problems that resulted in the current issue was follow the advice of another person on the communities was as per below.  Could this have caused it?  Thanks Phil.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

    Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

    res

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

    resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

    Select

    Restart

    from the menu bar.

    Hi Kappy

I have made some progress today.  I migrated my old home folder to the new mac with everything except applications and it seems to startup just fine.  So its something in the apps thats at fault.  Any idea how I might identify this?

    Cheers Phil.

    Phil,

You have an enormous number of third-party applications and utilities installed as well as a startup items, login items, etc. I don't know what many of them are for, but I would say that these may be the reason for both slow startups and slower performance. Because of the number of items unknown to me I hesitate to suggest what to exclude, but as you reinstall all your third-party stuff I would do so one or two at a time then test the startup and overall performance before adding one or two more. There is nothing in the Etrecheck report that indicates incompatible software, so it's hard to say if that, too, could be a contributing factor. I do note, however, a large number of third-party extensions most of which are not loaded. I don't know if this is because they are not yet needed or if they simply are not going to work with Mavericks.

    Hi Kappy

Thanks for your reply.  In the end I went and migrated everything to the new MBP.  It has left me with the 2 min startup but I just could not face working my way through 100+ apps to find the bogey man!  I have had a mac since 1991 so have collected lots of junk along the way ! When the MBP has booted up it runs like a rocket so guess I will have to live with it.

One last thought.  Is it possible to see from a terminal log where the holdup might be during boot up?

    Cheers Phil.

Try the Console which is in the Utilities folder. You may also see clues in Activity Monitor. It is possible something which is obvious to you could appear in them.
