Audiobook won't bookmark

Just picked up a new nano. Previously used a 5G iPod which worked well with audiobooks.

Added an Audible book to it. The nano remembers how far through the book I am until I navigate away, say to listen to some music. When I return to the book, it's back to the beginning.

Turning off the iPod, putting it on hold - the bookmark is remembered. Hit Menu even once and the bookmark is lost.

I checked the book's information and it is tagged as an Audible file, the "Remember playback position" is checked but disabled (so I couldn't turn it off).

Any ideas why the bookmark is not sticking?

EASY FIX
none of my audiobooks from audible would bookmark with my new nano 8GB. i found that it was actually itunes 7 that took off all my bookmarks, not my nano. all i had to do was select all my audiobooks, right click them (or ctrl click), select 'get info', and then select 'remember position-yes'. the 'remember position' is the same as 'bookmark' i guess. hope it works for you.

Wallyprecious: That is not possible with audiobooks downloaded from Audible. The 'remember position'-checkboxes are greyed out with these audiobooks. I tried the same Audible-audiobook on my new 2. gen-nano and on my old nano. The result was, that bookmarking is only working on the old one. The new iPod is only able to bookmark audiobooks from ripped CD, where the 'remember position' were checked.

Thanks. I tried this fix and it worked.
I'd guess it is the IPOD 2g's firmware(I'm using the first fix, 1.02,I believe), assuming none of the other models are having the problem.
The bookmarks still worked for me in itunes, just not on my new 2nd gen ipod. Itunes even knew where I stopped listening to a song on my ipod, though the ipod did not know.
Thanks again.

Hi,

I have the new 8GB nano as well, and none of my audiobooks will bookmark. They're all from Audible. I haven't tried 'removing' them from iTunes and re-importing them yet. And it's hard to tell from this forum list if that will work. Has anyone else managed to get Audible Books (from AUDIBLE) working with the new 8GB nano and iTunes?

It's extraordinarily annoying right now.

Hi

Just wondering if you managed to get any further with this? I am having the same issue. "Upgraded" from a 1G to a 2G (8GB) nano and now some but not all Audible books won't remember their positions on the iPod itself (seem fine in iTunes).

I've tried to restore my iPod and just download one book to it, same problem. It's strange that it's not all books though.

Cheers, James

OK - replying to my own post in the hope that others find this helpful.

It seems that whether or not an audiobook works OK depends on when I first downloaded it. If I was using iTunes prior to 7 then the bookmarks don't work, but if it's a more recent audiobook that I got while using iTunes 7 then it's fine.

Also, re-importing the books that aren't working into iTunes seems to fix the problem!

I'm using OS X and to do this I drag the song OUT of iTunes and onto my desktop, delete the iTunes song, and drag the desktop copy back over, deleting the desktop one when that's done (I get iTunes to create a copy of each song when I import).

I am guessing that iTunes uses a slightly different metadata format in the tracks, and the 2nd gen nano can't understand the iTunes 6 metadata or something like that. Hope apple are able to fix it though as it's not a good user experience...

I have a brand new 8 GB nano and am having some bookmarking problems. My Audible books bookmark fine as do some books I have imported from disk, converted to AAC and changed the extension to m4b. However, some of my audiobooks with the m4b extension do not behave like audiobooks, they are not recognized in iTunes as audiobooks and not listed as audiobooks on my old 30 GB iPod photo or my new nano. Interestingly, these audiobooks are bookmarkable on the iPod photo but not on the nano. I have tried deleting and reimporting but this doesn't fix the problem. The nano definitely behaves differently from the iPod photo. Any suggestions? I have looked at discussions on the audiobook problem. Playing the audiobook does not seem to cause iTunes to recognize it as such even with the m4b extension. Thanks for any help
