Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.

I have given your suggested advice a try but am still finding my wifi dropping out in the same way as before. It doesn't seem to happen as frequently but it's still happening on average every 15-20 minutes instead of every 5-10 minutes.
I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.
