apple tv and macbook pro issue

I have a macbook pro (updated) and new Apple TV connection device. I can only get sound when a movie is playing and than a periodic screenshot of movie. Plus there is a delayed screen. I don't want to wear out ports on macbook. Trying everything i can before i return apple tv. any help would be awesome.macbook software OS X10.9.4 (13E28), Kernel version: Darwin 13.3.0
