I wish to transfer a photo taken on my iPhone 5 onto my MackBook Air. I Select it in Camera Roll, and hit the Air Drop button on my phone. I open AirDrop on my Mac, and it seems to be looking for nearby devices (the icon in the sidebar of Finder twirls like a radar screen) but it never finds my phone. Do I have to enable something somewhere? Both Bluetooth and WiFi are active on my MacBook Air.

Make sure your Mac supports AirDrop > Mac Basics: AirDrop helps you share items with others nearby
AirDrop requires Wi-Fil not Bluetooth.
Make sure your OS X software is up to date.
Click the Apple top left in your screen.
From the drop down menu click: Software Update
My MacBook Air (bought new a week back) definitely supports AirDrop.

I'm inferring from the article you sent me, that it is only possible between two Macs, or between two iOS devices (iPhone to iPhone, iPhone to iPad, etc.) and not between an iPhone 5 (iOS) and a MacBook Air (OS X). Is this correct?
airdrop don't seem to work between ios and osx
AirDrop between IOS & OSX is not supported with the current version.
The coming IOS 8 and OSX Yosemite will be able to.
