Ubuntu font and Mac OSX

I really like Ubuntu font, so I installed it also on my Mac.

All seemed good at first, using a simple text editor such as TextMate; but when I wanted to use Pages or simply Byword or Ulysses, I realised that something was going wrong with—characters encoding?

Look at this screenshot (the application is Pages):

The text should be, instead, this:

This is a test. Let[U+2019]s use some apostrophes and dashes.

[U+2013] I[U+2019]m goin[U+2019] out with my friends, mum.

[U+2013] What time are you comin[U+2019] back?

[U+2013] About 23 o[U+2019] clock[U+2014]or maybe 24.

That is:

This is a test. Let’s use some apostrophes and dashes.

– I’m goin’ out with my friends, mum.

– What time are you comin’ back?

– About 23 o’ clock—or maybe 24.

Why does this happen? Is there something I can do?

I've already tried, but it hasn't worked. The font is still confusing those characters.

Make sure that you are typing "straight" apostrophes (') and not "curly/smart" ones (’) They do look different. Increase the size to check. Turning off "smart quotes" should do that. No font can make these mistakes if you are typing straight apostrophes.

Is this where you got the Ubutu fonts?

As far as I can see, there' nothing wrong with them. There are a small number of glyphs in each font that don't have Unicode code points assigned to them, but most of each font does. I tested every face that came in the set and they all work as expected.

I managed to solve this problem!

Anyone who is experiencing the same issue, may follow these steps:

  • Uninstall the Ubuntu Font Family from Font Book;
  • get the .ttf files from http://font.ubuntu.com again;
  • download TransType (7-days trial version);
  • open it;
  • drag the folders containing the font (ubuntu and Ubuntu_Mono) into its window;
  • select all the styles, this way

User uploaded file;

  • re-convert the fonts — File > Convert Selected;
  • open re-converted .ttfs and install.
