Connect them to a network. On the iMac, open the Sharing pane of System Preferences, start File Sharing, and on the MacBook Air, use the Connect to Server command in the Finder’s Go menu.

Depending on what "access my files from my MacBook Air that are on my iMac" means exactly, you might consider AirDrop as an alternative to Niel's suggestion.
Mac Basics: AirDrop helps you share items with others nearby
Niel and sberman offer two good suggestions. Another possibility is 'the cloud'. There are lots of services such as DropBox and iCloud that let you keep files in sync using the Internet. There are security issues to consider - how safe do you feel letting Apple or another company keep your data on their servers? But there's no denying the convenience. I have tons of files that I don't worry about and let DropBox sync them. Other files I want extra security over and those I encrypt on my computer so they are synced encrypted. And for other files (like financial records) I use AirDrop so there's no middleman.
