Yes.
Alternatively, you can email the file, use an online service like Dropbox, or Google Drive, or even third party Apps like Photo Transfer App.

Yes you can do it. You have to add the .png file to the folder from which you sync photos in iTunes. If you do not sync photos using iTunes and you just want to add this one photo to your iPad, you could email it.
This explains how to sync photos using iTunes.
I suppose the bigger question is, what do you plan on doing with it once you get it to the iPad? If you want to add it to a Pages document or another word processing file, you can save the .png from an email into the photos app and then add it to the document from the Photos app.

I also am looking for a way to synchronise .png files from iMac to iPad using iTunes.
When I synchronise with iTunes to get .png files from iPhoto to the iPad, the files transfer without issues, but on the iPad they arrive as .jpg.
The same happens when I download a .png file from dropbox - it appears as .jpg on the iPad.
PhotoSync is able to transfer a .png file from the Mac to the iPad, and on the iPad it shows as .png - which is great.... unfortunately, when sending large amounts of images (e.g. several hundreds), PhotoSync doesn't send them in sequence and often just drops out during sending, creates issues knowing which images have been sent, and which not. Second disadvantage is that those files then clutter up the Camera Roll...
(I am doing photo manipulation on the iPad and love to have proper .png files available).
I was hoping that there might be a preference setting that allows the file format to be kept, but haven't found one.
Would appreciate suggestions, thanks in advance
