safari hijack

not sure what happened. safari was working this morning. Now when I open it I get directed to a screen with the address windows.techg.us and a pop up window that says "You are Getting Unauthorised access on your Browsers. Your Network may have been infected. Please call +1-844-482-1735 for immediate support!" when I click on the "okay" button in popup window to close it, it opens again, no matter how many times I try to close it.

I think this is a hack and when I called the number I got suspicious when they asked for my personal information (which I didn't give). Don't know how to rescue my safari. I can't delete it and reload since it's part of OSX. Suggestions?

Please ignore these. They are scams.

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:

The facts are:

1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.

2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there

is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.

3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that

the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering

techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.

4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on

your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a

protection against malware.

5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware

from which they purport to protect you.

6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.

7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.

8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something

you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.

9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

You have not been hacked and it probably isn't anything on your computer.

Give this a try:

Start by trying to use the Safari back button ◀︎ to get away from that page.

User uploaded file

If that doesn't work, force quit Safari and re-open Safari with the shift key held down.

Choose "Reset Safari..." from the Safari menu to clear the history and cache files of this page.

If you continue to have problems with being re-directed to adware, use the reference that Carolyn gave you.

This advice also solved my "hijacked" safari browser problem this morning."Your browser has been hijacked, call 1.844.521.0863 for immediate assistance." I didn't call but came here on my laptop. Holding down the shift key to relaunch Safari seems just too simple to be true though, has me worried it wasn't enough? I'll clear the history too as per MadMacs very helpful advice.

Wondering... I too clicked "OK" on the popups, before finding this info on shutting down Safari and re launching. Carolyn's warning that this then installs the malware has me concerned. So far the browser seems back to normal and I am so not technically inclined.

Edit: I just cleared the history and noticed "mackeeper" on it, between the two Author web sites I was visiting. I do now remember it popped up out of no where and I clicked x to close it… would this have been where the problem originated? It was the second to last item listed in my history before I experienced the warnings and not being able to close safari (big warning in black letters on the Safari page and a pop up)
