Q: Consistent spinning beachballs (in Pages, numbers, preview, etc.)

I have an early 2008 imac, running Mavericks.

I can open existing Pages and Numbers documents and everything seems to work fine. (using Pages 5)

But I can't open a new blank document in Pages or Numbers. (I get spinning beachball, 99%+ cpu, must force quit)

Also I can use preview to open any document (pages, numbers, text, jpg), but if I try to export as pdf, it freezes using 99%+ cpu, and must be force quit.

I deleted and reloaded Pages, also reloaded Mavericks. it didn't help.

I replaced the containers and preference files. No difference.

Fontbook did find like 100 warnings in my 800 fonts, no errors though.

Other weirdness: Quicktime has lots of weird behavior - opening windows for previously viewed videos, cursor unable to operate the controls or close/minimize windows) I have to use quicktime player 7 instead.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

If you only have 2GB of RAM -- least you could buy in 2008 you don't have enough to run Mavericks.

I think with Maverick it needs 4GB - but if you really want to run stuff you need 8GB.

With Snow Leopard designed to reduce the OS footprint one would have though Apple was going for a slender efficient operating system going forward - apparently instead it seems to have been turned into a road hog.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.

Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select

              FileRestore Standard Fonts...

You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.

Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

Applications that can store documents in iCloud include Preview, TextEdit, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand, and some third-party software such as "DayOne," "iA Writer," "MindNode," and perhaps others. The Mail application uses iCloud to sync rules, smart mailboxes, and flag names among devices. iPhoto interacts with iCloud via Photo Stream. If some or all of those applications are suddenly not working well, there may be a problem with iCloud synchronization.

Back up all data before proceeding.

First, take the steps suggested in this support article. You can stop there if the problem is resolved.

Open the iCloud preference pane in System Preferences and click the button marked Sign Out. See whether there's any improvement. If there is, continue.

Hold down the option key and select

              Go Library

from the Finder menu bar. From the folder that opens, move this folder to the Desktop:

Mobile Documents (or any other item with a name beginning that way)

and move this folder to the Trash:

              Application Support/Ubiquity

Log out, log back in, sign back in to iCloud, and test. The folders should be recreated automatically. If the issue is resolved, delete the folder you moved to the Desktop.

If you continue to have the same problems, I suggest you contact iCloud Support.

Was there any difference while you were signed out of iCloud?

Yes, I did find a difference. When I open pages, it still hangs the same way, but now Activity Monitor says it's using 0% cpu instead of 100% (so I guess that's an improvement?)

    console says:

oh wait, I guess it wasn't hung, just temporarily not responding. I opened an existing document, which works fine, then tried to open a new blank document, and it's back to not responding, using 0% cpu, but maybe it will eventually snap out of it... it's been a few minutes. I have to go.
