Time capsule connection with DSL

I have DSL internet and just purchased a Time Capsule. I can't seem to get it hooked up properly. I do not have an Ethernet cable coming into my home just the DSL "phone" line. I currently have a modem/router for wireless internet but want to bypass it in hopes of better service. What do I need to do to get this up and running?

Sorry, but it will not be possible to bypass the modem/router, since the Time Capsule does not have a modem on board. The correct signal path will look like this on your network:

Phone Line > Modem/Router > Time Capsule > Devices

Specifically, connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.....and....then set up the Time Capsule to create a new network.

If you are using a Mac running Lion (10.7.x), Mountain Lion (10.8.x), or Mavericks (10.9.x), AirPort Utility will practically take care of the complete setup for you. Or, if you prefer, an iPhone or iPad can be used for the setup.

Are you currently having issues with your modem router?? If not I would simply setup the TC in bridge mode.. The airport utility may try and take over.. just ignore it and complete the utility.. then click edit.

There are three items to setup.

1. Internet.. set to dhcp.

2. Network .. set to bridge.

3. Wireless.. this one is a open to several choices.. but I would simply setup the TC to create a wireless network.

Give it a simple name.. eg TCwifi .. give the base station a simple name eg TCgen5 on the base station page.

The rest will all look after itself.

Press update and see how it goes.

The alternative setup is to bridge the adsl modem. You then need to use pppoe client for wan instead of dhcp.. it is lets say. Sometimes fine and sometimes fails completely and sometimes in between.

This is not always a reliable setup.. try it and see if you want.

Your ISP MUST support pppoe.. there ain't no other way.

Ok, so I tried to hook the time capsule up through my current router/modem but I still have no internet connection through my time capsule. My current internet service has a DSL line and a phone line splitter hooked into the phone line outlet in my wall. Then there is a Ethernet cord hooked into a SlingLink turbo plugged into a regular electrical outlet. Both the DSL line coming form the splitter and the Ethernet cord from the SlingLink are pugged into the back of the router/modem. I left them hooked up as normal and then ran another Ethernet line to the time capsule but I don't even get a light to come on at the Ethernet connection point on the back of the time capsule. I also tried unplugging the Sling link and just connecting that Ethernet cable from the router/modem to the time capsule. This time I had lights on the back of the time capsule but no internet connection was found. Any thoughts????

Sorry, I cannot help on the SlingLink device.

The Time Capsule will need to be connected directly to the modem/router using an Ethernet cable.

What is the make and model number of the modem/router?

.What operating system are you using on the Mac or PC that will be used to set up the Time Capsule?

If you have a Mac and are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

I assume that you have tested all of the Ethernet cables to verify that they are working correctly.

I am not familiar with that modem/router, and cannot really find much information about it. This is the best that I can do....look familiar?

Might you have a link to the setup guide or operator manual for the product that you have? I don't want to guess at things and provide the wrong information.
