iphone not charging (water damage)

Need help. My iphone 4 8g fell down a pipe! submerged in water for about half an hour. Left it in rice for a day and everything works fine (except the screen looks alittle ugly (still alittle wet.) Problem is, its not charging. it says charging but the battery percentage is going down. Now dead and has charging sign on screen but not getting anywhere. Is there any way i can save my phone? 😟 i am not in a contract its an unlocked phone. please help! xo

Same thing happened to me this evening, my iPhone 6s was not charging and speaker was not working due to moisture. Then I did something unique. I kept my phone over the series bulb lighting, and covered it with cloth. Left it for 5 min then repeated this step of heating my phone for over 4 times. And my phone started charging and after sometime the speaker started working. CAUTION: the series light bulb got hot, so check it continuously. Use cotton cloth to cover the phone and light as other clothes may catch fire. And be safe your phone may get overheated, try on your own risk. 👍-1F3FB; Best of luck.

When trying to survive from water damage, especially of the magnitude that you describe, can take up to a week in rice. As you have found, you have probably lost function of the phone and it will not recover. Water and electronics do not mix. You can return the phone to Apple and ask for an out of warranty exchange, which will cost you money, but significantly less than a new phone. I doubt you will ever save this phone.

If you can backup your phone before using the below option then I would back it up and use the out of warranty option:

Out-of-warranty* cost:

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5: $269
iPhone 4s: $199
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, Original iPhone: $149
Plus a $6.95 shipping fee. Fees are in USD and exclude local tax.
*Accidental damage isn’t covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.

If you have important data that is still on the phone and you do not have a backup, and unable to do a backup, then try what I described earlier because the geniuses at the bar WILL NOT recover your data. Seeing that my technique worked for me, I will stand by my earlier response (the one that was removed).

Also, I would use silica/desiccant packs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly-o7sAsFtI over rice any day.

Giving someone an option is not being malicious! If my phone works exactly the way it did before it was submerged for 4 days, why shouldn't I share my experience? Sure, they can go out and spend more money but that will not replace the data on their phone. If you have nothing on your phone worth saving then take advantage of the out of warranty option. But because I give a different option then what you propose, I'm being malicious??? Give me a break!

Your post was removed because you told people to open their phone, which will forfeit any warranty or post-warranty support from Apple for the device. This is an Apple hosted site, and telling people to open their phones violates their TOS. If you want to recommend to people to open their phones, then head over to one of the other rumor/help sites that are not hosted by the manufacturer. Use some common sense.

I truly do not understand where you guys are coming from! As long as the phone owner knows that by opening the case they will not be able to use the out of warranty option, the phone owner has the right to know other options which they can take at their own financial risk.

Rumor? I can most certainly prove my option worked! Sometimes recovering the data on the phone is more important than any money that could possibly be saved.

I am using common sense. I'm sharing my experience that was a 100% success but you all have decided you do not want anyone to hear about it. That is pretty curious to me. If I read between the lines as to what you have just posted, you are telling me to keep my experience to myself so you can make more money. Is that the common sense you are talking about?

Thanks to all the moderators/genius bar folks for your feedback. I will take my recommendations to a different site (rumor site as you say) and use the pdf of these strings to show how you do not aim to help your customers as much as line your pockets with as much cash as you can. Keep recommending people put their phones in rice for 7-14 days while corrosion gets a good start! Brilliant!

I really like the fact that you read and commented on what you wanted to, and ignored the reason that I responded. As far as reading between the lines, I would like to know what kind of money you expect me to make on this, since I am a user like you and not an Apple employee. Had you looked a little closer at those TOS that you violated, you would see this is a user to user support forum, and not manned by Apple employees. Go ahead and get more of your posts removed.

I never said what you said was a rumor, I said you could go to one of those sites that allow you to talk about that option. It isn't me that has decided anything, it is Apple, because this is an Apple hosted site. That is where you lost your common sense.

Backing up is not always possible! Some of us travel out of country months at a time not able to get to our desktop (I never backup to the cloud including icloud (I have a masters in cybersecurity so I know how secure the cloud is)), use a work phone that has restrictions, etc... I do use a software program that allows me to backup to a portable wifi hard drive but I neglected to backup my data in a timely fashion this time. Regardless of the reason, if the data is important and you have no other option, you either send it to a very expensive recovery service or do it yourself.
