What's the deal with calibrating?

I used my iPod with the Nike+ shoes for about a week without calibrating. I then tried calibrating and all my miles per minute and kilometres per minute changed. Also, I took the same route on one of my runs before I calibrated and it was 5.85 km in about 33 minutes and then the same route after calibrating was 4. 49 km in about 40 min. I'm wondering why my average pace has gone way up since i started calibrating. For example, if I run 2 km in 10 minutes doesn't that mean I have ran 5 min/km no matter who I am?

I share a nano with my wife. We use the one receiver and each have our own nike+ sensor. We're both in the habit of linking the receiver to the sensor before each run. I've noticed recently, that the difference in pace and distance between the treadmill and ipod has been greater. I can attribute some of the difference to trying different sensor holders on a non-nike shoe vs the Morie. Nevertheless, it has been off by more than I had experienced earlier. The recent irratic pace and distance recordings are puzzling. Other posted messages have alluded to the same puzzling occurance. As a result, I'm tempted to calibrate. What I was wondering was, if I calibrate my sensor, would it affect the performance of the second sensor and visa versa. Have others who also share a nano had the same occurance? Are the irratic pace and distance readings due inpart to the linking and re-linking that occurs? Thanks

I know it's answered, but I thought I'd chime in a bit on my calibration experience.

I'm 6ft 176 or thereabouts w/ a relatively even long stride.

Out of the box: iPod was somewhat under-estimating my speed/distance
Calibrated on a track set to miles for 1/4: iPod seriously underestimated
Calibrated on a track set to KM: iPod came out almost dead on.

I don't know why this would happen or if it was just some voodoo luck on my part, but I would suggest that anybody having accuracy problems try a track calibration in kilometers instead of miles.

Good Luck

I have had very inconsistent results with the Sport Kit on my treadmill. Most of the time it's ok, but once in a while the accuracy is way off. Unless you only ever run on a treadmill, I wouldn't recommend it for calibrating.

I wrote an article about calibrating the Nike+iPod kit here:

As I learned: The treadmill is not the place to calibrate your nike+kit

I always run metric since I live in Germany and do not run with nike+ shoes.
I use the Malware pouche. The sensor was off by more than 10%.

I took it to a track (400m) and calibrated the kit. Now it is perfect. Less than 1% difference.

I do suggest to check that website:

to calibrate your runs.
