I use stacking software to make star trail photographs (starstax) when I drag and drop the photos to be stacked from iphoto they end up in a random order. This also happens with a focus stacking app I have been trying. They appear in order in the finder but if I select them using the browse facility they still end up randomly. Ideas ?

Please explain - and does this involve iPhoto in any way? It sounds like either a finder question or a startrax question - iPhoto has nothing to do with how either application views photos

To us iPhoto photos with another application you either select them in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) using the desired export options - see the user tip on exporting for details - Exporting From iPhoto

Or you use the file ==> attach (or import or some other term depending on the Application) command in the application and the media browser in iPhoto in the lower left of the open/attach/import window under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto - see the user tip on accessing iPhoto files for details - How to Access Files in iPhoto

The Finder sorts photos alphanumerically or by date. It has no "random" capability. So if you want your manually sorted photos in iPhoto to remain in the same order you need to do one of the following;

#1

1 - select the photos in the album as you want them sorted and use the Photo ➙ Batch Rename ➙ Title to Text with a sequential number added to each file name.

2 - Export the photos to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the File Name = Title option.

#2

1 - Select the album containing the photo in the order you want and export to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the File Name = Album name with \ number option.

Either method will give you files that will appear in the Finder in the order as they were in iPhoto.
