Q: problems with thunderbolt and migration assistant

I've had difficulties getting the 2012 MacAir to "see" the 2014 macAir. Even when they finally connected, it was not clear to me that they were communicating via the thunderbolt cable. I have about 100 gigs to migrate, and it is taking close to 3 hours. Is that normal using a thunderbolt cable? Has it defaulted to WiFi? Is there a way to tell? Would I have been better off using a Time Machine backup? Thanks,

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), receiving machine on mavericks.

I would say that's pretty slow for Thunderbolt. More like Wi-Fi. However, if you are using Target Disk Mode then it can't default to Wi-Fi.

Yeah, you are right. I was migrating from a MacAir with Mountain Lion to one with Mavericks, and hadn't read the fine print about putting it into Target Disk Mode. That was two hours ago, and it still says more than an hour to go. I am very tempted to stop the process but fear the consequences on the new machine.

I would not stop it in mid-stream since that will make even more work to do. Let it go on since you are now committed.
