I can't open a MOV file. why?

I'm trying to make an iMovie and some of my video clips will not open. They are in a MOV format, but I am getting this message, Quicktime Player cannot open "cache 111.mov"

Other MOV format clips have worked, but I have about 50 that will not? It is possible these clips came from a video recorder to tape which was then uploaded to my Mac. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Hi csailer,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're running into an issue playing .MOV files in QuickTime Player. Take a look at the article linked below, it describes the file formats and components that QuickTime Player supports.

Also, these articles will help you find additional information about the video files on your Mac or add additional codecs and components to QuickTime Player.
