Ear Buds broke off in ipad no sounds. These were new ear Buds

Purchased new ear buds! Apple brand. plugged into Ipad no sound tried to remove they broke off the stem is inside the Ipad. Ipad 18 mos old Ear buds new! Shouldnt Apple cover repair?
