Grey screen with message continuously appears after kernel panic on macbook air!!!!

Grey screen with message continuously appears after kernel panic on macbook air. Tried to press shift, cmd and v during startup which said cannot identify os x version. Please help!! What can I do? All my school papers are on that computer and I haven't been backing it up.
