Q: Why isn't my RAM clearing when nothing's running?

I believe this to be a java based issue, because it started shortly after I downloaded a modpack for minecraft. My friends who played the same modpack on PCs are having similar issues and that's the only thing we all play.

Anyway, my macbook is a mid 2012 aluminum macbook pro running 10.9.4, I have four gigs of ram and using nothing but Chrome and activity monitor, but it says I have 3.4 gigs of RAM in use. I suspect that it's keeping all my minecraft RAM dedicated instead of inactivating and repurposing it like it's supposed to because my computer has been sluggish at other tasks.

If anyone could tell me how to do a RAM dump on a mac or if there's something else I need to do to fix this, it would be much appreciated!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

It's normal in Mavericks for almost all memory to be in use, either by applications or by the file cache. That's what you should want, since unused memory is going to waste. The relevant measure of whether memory is in short supply is what Apple calls "memory pressure."

Apple's explanation of memory pressure is here. If you want a more detailed, technical description, see here.
