My iPad won't restore (Unknown error 3014). How can I get past this?

I've tried numerous times to restore my iPad (2nd Generation), however each time it simply comes up with an error message "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3014)." This started when I tried to plug my iPad in for the 1st time since purchasing it quite some time ago. I have hundreds of pictures I don't want to lose. I'd love to have the iPad updated to the latest iOS, however if I could just have access to my emails, photos, etc. from the backup I'd be more than happy. Any thoughts on how to do this (if it is even possible?) Thanks!

I was stuck in this situation today and had success switching from one computer (Windows 10 tower) to a different one (MacBook pro running current Mac OS).
