OS X 10.89.4.

MacOS X 10.8.4 or MacOS X 10.9.4?

In both MacOS X version can you enable iCloud from the System Preferences > iCloud pane.

iCloud will store and synchronize your Photo Streams, iCloud Mail, Documents, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Keychain, if you enable these options. But it will not backup your Mac generally. What kind of backup are you asking about? The iCloud backup of mobile devices?

(iCloud: Backup and restore overview)

To access documents, that are stored in iCloud, open an application, that can open documents of that type. To access Pages documents in in iCloud, open Pages, to access PDFs, open Preview and use the iCloud icon in the "Open" panel".

Oh sorry - it's a OS X 10.9.4

I do not need or want to backup notes, and contacts, or any other of the 81-0 things iCloud show - but had heard that I could backup some of my PS files for example. Or other photos on my Mac. I know I cannot store ID files, but should be able to store PS, or PDF files, no.?

And how do I get the ICloud icon to my top menu bar.?

You can store any image file that Preview can open (PDF, png, ...) on iCloud, but it is not yet as convenient as with the new MacOS X version to come.

To safe the image file in iCloud:

  • Open the image document in Preview.
  • Use the command "File > Move to" and click the iCloud Brick in the "Where" drop-down menu.

To open your iCloud images on the Mac launch Preview again and click the iCloud icon in the File Chooser. To create folders, drag the thumbnails on top of each other.

Select the thumbnail of the image you want to open.

There is no iCloud icon in the main menu bar of MacOS X Mavericks. It will appear only in the menu bar of the applications that can open cloud documents.

For a work-around see Winton Churchill's User ip: Using iCloud to sync multiple document types.
