Have tried to reset default keychain - 'specified keychain could not be found' so not possible. Any help please? System OSX 10.9.4 using Mavericks.

You can delete the keychain from the Finder, and the system will prompt you to create a new one when you next need to store a password. It's in ~/Library/Keychains and should be called "local".

Yes I tried that via Preferences - reset my default key chain - but the response is 'the specific keychain could not be found'.
The File - delete key chain local items is greyed.
There is no possibility I can find to sync log-in password with local items.
Have tried Keychain First Aid - Repair but gets stuck on 'error login keychain not found'
Don't do it within Keychain Access - do it within the Finder. Open a new Finder window, and use the Go menu - type in (or copy and paste)
~/Library/Keychains
Then delete the "login.keychain" you find there (sorry, not "local.keychain" as I said earlier). Log out of your Mac and back in again using the Apple menu.

Thanks Matt - have found at ~/Library/Keychains : System.keychain (the other three folders don't open - System.keychain-orig , apsd.keychain , applepushedserviced.keychain) but the one I need is Local Items keychain which I can't unlock via Keychain Access but I can unlock System keychain bizarrely.
Do I then delete the System.keychain available ?

No, don't do that. Try this:
In Keychain Access, use the File menu to create a new keychain - call it whatever you want (it will probably default to your name), and secure it with your Mac login password (you CAN use a different password, but you just have to remember it). Then right-click (or ctrl-click) it in the top-left corner of the window, and click "Make XXX keychain default". This keychain will now be used to store your various logins.

OK that's done...what next?
Matt have made the fresh folder and defined it as default but all the apps keep,demanding "Local Items" keychain which I can't delete!
Not sure where we go from here...

Have you restarted the computer? (It should be enough to log out and back in, but a restart is not a bad idea.)

Yes I had closed down completely and then restarted but the dialogue boxes requesting use of Local Items keychain proliferate. Cannot use email and both Mail and Safari prevent the computer shutting down.
Hey ho something is happening after three log outs closedowns and restarts one app accepted the new my name keychain and now I note in Keychain Access that all the key chains unlock (except for Sophos)
Having to re-input all email account passwords as Mail is not receptive.
Let you know how I go.

Most now works although Mail is still jammed. Getting lots of requests for keychain access password either for my name or local or login : mostly - mail/safari/com.appleinternetacct/calendar.agent/address.book and principally Mail requests.
How does one prevent the incessant demands for keychain access? It never happened previously except rarely ...
The keychain issue appears to have affected the Mail service and the computer has slowed with plenty of spinning disc time. Have run virus scan (Sophos) and verified disc no issues.

OK resolved that problem by keeping open permanently the Keychain locks and then running a verify and repair via the First Aid menu.
Still having problems sending email on two accounts in Mail but guess will resolve in due course.
