If your computer is an early Intel-based MacBook, it may be too old to upgrade
to OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks; however it may be able to use OS X 10.7.5 Lion.

Since you do not state any specifications of the computer, its build model identifier
or other information, the topic is rather wide open. If your computer could support
the upgrade to Mavericks OS X 10.9.4, the Mac App Store accessed Snow Leopard
OS X 10.6.8 should allow you to check into that store for upgrade possibilities. Or
other possibilities such as Lion should appear in the store, for older intel-macs.

Lion 10.7.5 requires a purchase code to download and install it; however 10.6.8
has to be installed & running in its final version to access the Mac App Store, etc.
See the first link for some info about that aspect; the newest iPhone and other
iDevices won't connect to a vintage OS X, or other devices may be limited if they
shipped with or were upgraded to a later iOS that won't sync with Lion 10.7.5.
There are several details and the information can be conditional.
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
You should be able to sync your iPhone using v10.6.8.
