Safari trouble

I don't know if something downloaded without me knowing it, but when I open Safari and try to access a website, upon loading the website I want to go to, safari opens up 1 to 2 more tabs loading junk ads and promotions. Can I find this mistakenly download "virus" and get this to stop. Or what else can I do to stop it. I really need help. Thank you.
