Q: Computer running slower and wondering processes are necessary

Hello guys,

I am having issues with a slow running computer and am seeking help. I have been monitoring my activity monitor when things  seem to get slow and it says that 3.98 GB of memory are being used of my 4GB, plus another 4.9 GB in virtual memory, and that's generally when I'm running lean and don't have all that much stuff open at once. My plan is to put more RAM in the computer, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to try and clean some things up and make sure that no unnecessary processes, had found there way on to my computer. I am particularly curious about "kernel_task" which eats up the most memory, but there are so many other smaller ones that I am sure all add up, but I am guessing many are necessary.

I am going to go back through and read some more of the previous questions and threads, but wanted to go ahead and post my report to see if I could get the ball rolling for help.

Thanks in advance for any willingness to help!

    Lex,

Thank you for the guidance. I believe I did everything you said, except I do actually use logmein and my guess is that the vendor who we use it to log into their system has paid for it as we were just given login credentials and have never had to pay for anything over the years.

So I left the logmein entries, but is the java applet you mentioned associated with it, or should it still be removed?

Aside from that, I believe I made the rest of your corrections and here is my current report:

It is all depending on the OS you use, Mavericks?.

You came here, when you login in the Forum, you can choose "NEW", to start a thread.

    Lex,

I haven't been able to put it through all the paces yet, but at first glance, it does seem to be running quicker and smoother, so I am happy about that. If you don't think there's anything else to be on the look out for, I will just keep an eye on it and post back if it does seem to be decreasing speed again.

So the kernel_task in the activity monitor then with 84 threads are all, or mostly at least, legit processes then?

Thanks again for all of your help.

"So the kernel_task in the activity monitor then with 84 threads are all, or mostly at least, legit processes then?"

    Not really different or special.

You might ask Linc Davis what he meant with "Your thread is about to turn into a disaster, so if you expect to get any useful information out of it, you need to act fast.". it was directed to you. I am also not aware why and based on what he made this remark. But he may see something that we overlooked.

    Linc,

I did all of the things Lex suggested. Is there something that we overlooked you think? Neither of us were sure by what you meant that the thread was about ready to turn into a disaster so just wanted to see if there was something you think we missed.

    Thanks,

Ya I was curious about that too, so did reply. Thanks again for your help and we will see if Linc has anything more to add.
