Insert an SD card reader and into a USB port and copy or drag the file to the SD card via Finder.
The SD card needs to be formatted in a format that the Macv OS can write to. Without software, a Mac can't write to NTFS but can to FAT32
Thank you so much I have been having the hardest time ever trying to figure it out! Now I just need to find out how I can run the file, it wants me to buy apps to be able to open it and I've bought three of the suggested ones and none of them will work. It's extremely frustrating!
This is what it says when I try to open it "There is no application set to open the document "HDS_Gen2-3.0-45.291-Standard-1.upd" so I bought three different apps to do that, it has kind of frozen up trying to pull it up so once it does Ill tell you what it says. But its for a lowrance depth finder its supposed to go on an sd card and then to my depth finder to update all of them so it will let me bluetooth to the radio that was just put in the boat! Once problem after another LOL
"The document "HDS_Gen2-3.0-45.2.91-Standard-1.upd" could not be opened. File View Pro cannot open files in the "GenRandom735" format." Thats what it tells me when I tried to open it up with File View Pro.
Googling shows that a .upd file is an update file. You do not open it on a Mac.
From your description it appears that it is used to update your depth finder.
How does the manual/instructions/support site for the depth finder tell you how to update the device?
Yes, like I said in my first reply:

AH yes thank you thank you!!!! I think I have got it down now! I unzipped the file put it on a usb then put the usb in a different not mac laptop that had a slot for the sd card and Im crossing my fingers that when I get home it will work!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! For all of your help!! By far the most helpful person I've spoked to in a while!
What is the specific format of the file?
Where did it come from?
by downloading it and then putting it on a blank 32 gb sd card
You do not need to open it. Just, in Finder, either drag and drop the file to the SD card or copy and paste it.
What happens when you do that?
I would need an sd card reader to be able to have the sd appear on my computer though wouldn't I?
do you by any chance know how i can unzip a zipped file?
