Sep 5, 2014 3:02 PM in response to forevercaliby rcastardo,I am new to macs - have not seen this but - I use PRIVATE BROWSING - find it at Safari/Private browsing. No history is generated but no ads.

Sep 6, 2014 5:18 AM in response to forevercaliby John Galt,You may have inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware.

Sep 6, 2014 6:06 AM in response to forevercaliby VikingOSX,The site macnn dot com (as an example) has news articles that have advertising words that are tied to JQuery/JavaScript code that senses when your pointer crosses the word. It then fires a pop-up with a movie, or other advertising content.
Turning off JavaScript in the browser fixes this, at the expense of normal site code that expects JavaScript enabled in the browser. This community site for instance, won't behave correctly with JavaScript disabled. Enabling private browsing does disable some of these green keywords (they simply have no text decoration), but not all of them on the same site. So it is a partial solution. I have also found that enabling private browing in Safari 7.0.6 will prevent one from posting on this site.
Personally, I recognize these advertising words and simply avoid placing a mouse near them.

Strange, I don't see any such ads on macnn, although I've seen informational pop-ups from such JS on other sites.
It certainly sounds like you have installed Downline or VSearch adware. Try the new AdMedic beta from the developer of the Adware Removal Tool and see what it finds.
Edit: After turning off all my Safari Extensions, I did find one such ad for smartphones, so you are probably not infected.
