Q: Downloading older version of Garageband on OS 10.9.4?

Hello!

I have a new Mac with OS 10.9.4 that has got Garageband 10.0.2 preinstalled. Here are my two questions:

1) Is that possible I download an older version of GB, and keep using both new and old versions?

2) The new Mac is missing a lot of old mac effects like 'Track echo', 'Track reverb' etc., where do I find them all?

Please help with appropraite links if any. I would want all missing effects back in my new GB please

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Both versions can be installed  in parallel, but it is not easy to buy GarageBand '11 for a Mavericks Mac.

Do you have an old mac with a previous GarageBand installation or is your first GarageBand installation?

If you previously owned GarageBand and bought it from the App Store, GarageBand '11 may still be showing among your purchases on the "Purchased" tab. Then try to reinstall from there.

Otherwise use the original installers from the old Mac or migrate all libraries.

On a Mac with GarageBand 10 preinstalled you cannot buy the older GarageBand '11 from the AppStore.  Your only option would be to buy an iLife '11 DVD from Amazon and use that the install GarageBand '11, and then update that version to GarageBAnd '11 from the apple Support Downloads page.

    2) The new Mac is missing a lot of old mac effects like 'Track echo', 'Track reverb' etc., where do I find them all?

GarageBand '10 is very different. You can no longer add effects freely to each and every track, only audio units. You add effects by selecting a patch from the library that has the effects. To browse and find out the effects available with each instrument patch use the tool "GB Effect Finder". This great tool can be downloaded for free from the Bullets&Bones site:

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I am sorry for being late in replying back to you as I was occupied with my music projects.

You seem to be knowing more that those Apple executives whom I spoke to and they seem to know NOTHING.

Okay. I am considering getting iLife older version DVD/installation files and get the older version of GB from there. Now my concern is will I have any compatibility issues if I do that? As I have Mavericks Mac :/ I dont want to mess my new macBook, all my musical dreams will go in vain

    Please suggest:

    1) Getting previous versions of GB from iLiFe older version shouldnt mess my Maverick. :/

    2) I also have an option to update my OS to YoseMite and update this Garageband 10 version as well. But I am holding on to it as I dont like the current version of GB in the first place, so why to update again?

Your suggestions really gona help me please. Thanks a lot again!

Before you do any installing, take the following precautions:

    • Make a full Time Machine backup of your Mac, so you are able to restore the previous state.
    • Sign into the AppStore (the Store menu) and check, if GarageBand 10.0 is listed on your Purchased tab. If GarageBand 10.0 is listed as your purchase, you can temporarily uninstall it (remove it from the Applications folder), before you install the older version.
    1) Getting previous versions of GB from iLiFe older version shouldnt mess my Maverick. :

GarageBand 6.0.5 is running well with Mavericks. Otherwise would the GarageBand 10.0 installer not let it installed in a separate folder. The only problem will be, that the iLife installer DVDs will not install GarageBand 6.0.5 but an earlier version, that cannot run directly in Mavericks. Before you open the installed GarageBand 6.0.x for the first time, run the updater from the Support page:   Use this link:  GarageBand 6 .0.5

Then test GarageBand 6.0.5, if it is running well.

Now reinstall GarageBand ´10 from the AppStore.

The iLife CD also has older versions of iMovie, iPhoto, and iDVD. You may want to install the iMovie and iDVD versions as well, if you like to make videos. In that case rename the newer versions temporarily, before you run the installer.

    2) I also have an option to update my OS to YoseMite and update this Garageband 10 version as well. But I am holding on to it as I dont like the current version of GB in the first place, so why to update again?

At least update to the latest Mavericks version, 10.9.5. for all bug fixes.

You may need to upgrade to Yosemite, if you updated any mobile device to iOS 8. Otherwise you will not be able to use iCloud Drive for your projects. Using iCloud with iOS 8 and on your Mac will require Yosemite.

    Thanks again!

    • Make a full Time Machine backup of your Mac, so you are able to restore the previous state.

Thanks for suggesting this Ill get an external disk and do this right away. I bought my MacBook just months ago.

    • Sign into the AppStore (the Store menu) and check, if GarageBand 10.0 is listed on your Purchased tab. If GarageBand 10.0 is listed as your purchase, you can temporarily uninstall it (remove it from the Applications folder), before you install the older version.

I checked my purchases in the app store and it says "You have not yet purchases any apps". May be cuz GB came preinstalled with my Mavericks.

So here is what I am going to do:

    1. Update to Mavericks 10.9.5
    2. Do a machine backup
    3. Get iLife'11 installers
    4. Before running the installed GB version 6.x which I got from the installer, run the update from the link you sent so I have 6.0.5 which runs on my Mavericks.
    5. Since I dont have any apps listed in my purchased list, guess I will have both the versions then.

Nope. I would just want GB from ILiFe. I am okay with whatever versions of other apps I have.

Nope. I dnt have any mobile device from Apple.

Let me go through these steps. Hope I got you correct and thanks a lot for your time and patience.

    Will keep you posted.

    Hey Léonie,

I took all the steps as mentioned in my previous reply.

I have run the iLiFe'11 DVD, it took me through steps to install iLife. And the moment it said "successfully installed", I checked my apps folder. I did not find any other GB icon. I noticed the installer did insall something called iDVD and Iphoto but not Garageband. Where else do I find it?

Also, i checked "show original" of the installer file and clicked on "garageband.pkg", for installation but boom! The newer GB icon also went off from my apps list

Thank God i had a backup and I just did a system restore. Any suggestions plz? Do I need to rename the newer version or something like that, how do I do that? Please help

    Hey Leonie!

I am so happy! I did it. I moved the existing Garageband 10 in a new folder and renamed this folder as "Garageband 10" in my applications list.

Then I run the iLiFe 11 installers and custom installed only Garageband (along with other preselected apps which are grayed out, meaning can't deselect them)

I finally saw 2 Garageband icons One in the applications list which is version 6 and the other in my folder

Then i checked the updates list and found 6.0.5 update and updated it

So I am running both 6 and 10 version of Garageband on my Mavericks This was possibly only because of you. Hats off!

Now, Let me explore both these versions. Meanwhile, here are the list of more updates in my software updates list. I also have an option to upgrade to Yosemite. Have no clue if this is safe for me as I want to keep both versions of GB. Please advise

    And thanks a ton!
