*PLEASE HELP* Spinning beachball keeps coming up…

Hey guys, even though I've got 500mb of RAM available for OSX to use the spinning beachball comes up every now and again and when it appears I’m unable to do anything other than move my mouse. Im running latest version of OSX Mavericks.

Thanks!

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Suggestions:

  1. You've got a lot of User Login Items. Try removing them and then restart.
  2. Get rid of the Google Keystone Agent. It's known for slowing things down with excessive phoning home. http://applehelpwriter.com/2014/07/13/how-to-remove-googles-secret-update-softwa re-from-your-mac/
  3. Try a safe boot OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode which will do some diagnostic testing and then start up without third party add-ons. The safe boot can take a while so be patient. If the SBBOD (spinning beachball of death) is resolved with a safe boot, you can then try a regular boot and see how it works. Sometimes (rarely) a safe boot will fix the problem. More likely, the SBBOD will return with a normal boot, but then you know it's the third party software that is the problem, and you can then try to isolate the problem (trial and error).
  4. Try a test user account Isolating an issue by using another user account
  5. If the test user account does not show the SBBOD then you know it is something in your user account. You can try
    1. boot into recovery mode and repair your HD and permissions OS X: About OS X Recovery
    2. reinstall Mavericks with the combo updater over your current installation OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
  6. As a last resort you could back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks.
  7. If none of that works, your HD may be failing. You can check the SMART status of the drive. If that's the case you would replace the HD.

You should answer Linc - he is trying to help you identify the root cause of the issue.

I see you have teamviewer installed - any chance you have given a password to some so-called "help desk" person or company?

Any reason you are running LittleSnitch?

Are anchorfree.tun (network tunnel software) and anchorfree.ajaxserver related to the same issue?

Is this enough? I removed my Mac's name and placed a *** in its place, but that's all.

Please help me!!!

Sep 16, 2014 9:58 AM in response to NewbMacUser

Didn't know you're still waiting -- sorry.

Your problem seems to be with a component of OS X - mDNS (Bonjour) or related network component.

As arthur suggests, next thing to try is a Safe Boot.

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

If that doesn't help,

next thing I'd suggest is to re-update to 10.9.4 using the COMBO updater (download, Not from Software Update):

OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)

If that still doesn't help, I think you need to reinstall OS X using the Recovery Partition:

OS X: About OS X Recovery
