Before following the advice in Niel's links, use Disk Utility to erase the drive. Make sure that the option to write zeroes is ENABLED.
If you don't do that, any sensitive information you had on the drive could still be recovered by your friend. Erasing the files does not remove the information. Overwriting the drive is the only way to ensure that the information is destroyed.
