Emails with large attachments vanishing

When I send an email with a large attachment it is not saved in the sent folder. All other emails are saved in the sent folder. The emails are received by the recipients. What is the problem and what is the solution?

The last time this happened the attachment in question was only 8.7 MB, well below the max of 20, and like I said it was received. If I had tried to send an attachment that was larger than the limit it would not have gone through.

I can't say that it only happens with larger attachments as some of my larger attachments have gone through. In my case it may be a coincidence that I have only noticed this on larger attachments.

Re: Sent mail disappearing?

How do I get Apple to support the service that I am paying for? A message board is a terrible way to address problems. Maybe with a better system of monitoring problems, say a phone number to call for help with such issues, and Apple could hear about problems before they read about them in the press.

I need a record of all sent emails.

I am also having this problem. It has likely been going on for some time, I just discovered through this thread that it only happens with larger attachments. I lost one today (had a 5 mg attachment) and there is NO TRACK record of it anywhere. I re-sent the message through gmail, and my recipient confirmed that she got both messages. So, how on earth would one track these disappearing messages Apple?! Kinda bad for business and other needs. Glad gmail works.

Hey kennethfromgalveston,

Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like only large attachments are not being sent. How large of a file are talking about? I would recommend that you follow this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate this issue. It has the iCloud Mail message sending limits.

I have confirmed by sending emails to myself that smaller attachments are being saved but larger ones are not. I am not connected to the internet on this computer by WIFI.

Is there another way to get service from Apple? When I call I'm told to use the send feedback form and this forum. When I use the forum the response ignores what I wrote and suggests user error.

This will be my third call to Apple support with this problem. First time they said wait for it to fix itself. Last time they said to use this forum and the feedback page. Is it possible to speak to someone at apple with technical knowledge of iCloud, that is to reach iCloud about the problem? Why does Apple prefer to learn about problems in their technical problems in the press?

I finally spoke to a supervisor at Apple Support. He will not put me in touch with iCloud. He says this is "expected behavior" and that larger attachments will not be kept in the sent folder. Apple is saying it's normal for sent emails with larger attachments not to be kept in sent folder, which makes their product completely unacceptable. At first he blamed this on phone memory limits then he blamed it on iCloud space limits. I have over half a gig of space left on iCloud. I asked how much additional space I needed in order to have sent email attachments saved in the sent box. After a long pause he came back and said he'd contact an engineer. This time he seemed to be describing the max attachment size. When I explained again that I did not exceed that max I was hung up on.

Wow, that is unbelievable! Just today was on my Macbook Pro and I found the messages that aren't in my sent items have appeared in "Recovered Messages (iCloud) -- On My Mac". I tried to move one of the messages to my sent items and it didn't work. Then I moved it to another iCloud folder.... It disappeared from the Recovered Messages folder, but it's not in the iCloud folder that I moved it to! I guess it will probably show up in the Recovered Messages folder again one of these days??? I checked my iMac and those messages that I had sent from my laptop are not in the "Recovered Messages (iCloud) -- On My Mac" folder. There are messages in the Recovered messages folder on my iMac that I had sent from that computer and didn't go to the sent items folder. So I guess it only recovers them locally.... Also, my iPhone says that I have 3.2 GB out of 5 GB available storage. This is frustrating. I will try to contact Apple Support. Do you think that they are more focused on the new OS that is being released, rather than fixing any bugs with this version??

Just saw this problem for the first time today, and I've used Mail.app ever since Apple's Claris Emailer folded, and I've used iCloud all the way back to the beginning of mac.com. I often send large attachments, and often review my Sent folder (for keeping track of billable time; I'm a lawyer).

To a lawyer, this inability to have copies of sent emails is a fatal problem.

I called Apple, talked to someone who seemed pretty knowledgeable, but who was completely stumped by the problem and said he would have to take it up with the engineers. I was especially unnerved that, working directly from iCloud.com thru Safari, and on the Apple tech's step-by-step advice, we reset Mail's preference to save sent emails to a new folder, which I named "Sent 2," and that test failed also. The sent test message appeared in the old "Sent" folder, not the new "Sent 2" folder.

I had one of the recipients of the ghost message reply back to me, and the reply clearly shows both the time my original message was received and the account it was sent from. I can't believe this is really happening. Not sure where to turn now.

I'd just like to add that I am having the exact same problem. It just started happening to me very recently, within the last two weeks...and the most recent occurrence happened to an email I sent that had a total of 2MB of attachments. Not very large at all. Everyone seems to have received these disappearing emails, but this is very disconcerting, as it has happened when I have sent out invoices to clients. I HATE that I have to contact a client an hour after sending an invoice to make sure they got it. I feel like I come off as badgering and overly-anxious to get paid. This is unacceptable.

I just logged into iCloud via web browser to check on my storage status. I still have 2GB of remaining space. So, storage is not the issue. And neither is file size. What's the deal, Apple?

Another oddity is that some of these emails miraculously appear in the Sent folder much later in the day, or even the next day. Some show up in the new and mysterious "Recovered Messages (iCloud)" folder. And others seem to be gone forever.

Are we sure this is isolated to iCloud? I am currently using Mavericks server in a small business and am experiencing the same thing using the Apple Mail client. The message gets sent but no record is kept in the sent mailbox of the Apple Mail account. My guess it is the Apple Mail client and not necessarily iCloud server, but I could be wrong. Has anyone tried a different mail client with iCloud to see if the behavior continues?

I have repeatedly flagged this problem and have never seen an acknowledgement from Apple, nor seen any solution posted.

Perhaps even more shocking is that if you try and get around the problem by bcc'ing the email to yourself, it is still 'culled' and you don't receive an email that you sent to yourself. This implies that the server is recognising your own email address and then deliberately trashing the email rather than send it to you.

It's an astonishing state of affairs from 'the world's biggest company'.
