DFU mode won't bypass the activation screen, only typing in the id and password that it's linked to in Settings > iCloud > Find My iPad (or potentially logging into that account on http://www.icloud.com and removing the iPad from it) will let you re-activate the iPad.

iOS 7 and activation lcck : Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account

Is it your account that it's locked to, or was the iPad bought second hand ? If you bought it used and it's locked to the previous owner's account then you will have to contact the previous owner and ask them to remove the iPad from their account.

If it's your account then on the activation screen do you not have the first letter of the account and the provider that it's linked to - if you do then do you remember having an account with that id ? If you don't then might you have any of the account's downloads in your computer's iTunes library : Recovering a forgotten iTunes Store account name ?

If not then see if you can find the id via http://appleid.apple.com : Apple ID: How to find your Apple ID

YEP! and that is the messed up part. I was the last person to use it and stopped using it 1-2 yrs ago. I used it mainly for reading books. So I didn't change any info. gave it to my mom and she asked "what is the 4 digit passcode". I gave it to her and it wouldn't accept it. I know it was correct because I didn't change it. So because of that I did the DFU to clear it out in hopes of making it a new iPad and here we are 2 days later. I've had this one since at least Aug 2011 (I have pics saved from it on file).

I have a new iPad and transferred all my books to it.

If you have a rescue email address on your account then you can use that to reset them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170

If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699

When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620

original activation info is required and I don't have it. what do I do?
