This is EXACTLY what has happened to me. Apple replaced my logic board and now iMessage contacts are in re

d or listed as "7046183853 is not registered with iMessage."... even when I know they are. My iphone 6 and ipad (same Apple ID) work fine.

I was on phone support for 1.5 hours without luck. Then I went to a Genius bar.. .another 1.5 hours and no resolution. I've searched support communities such as this and attempted fixes. No luck.

If you find any solution I would love to know. This is extremely aggravating.

Update.....

I spent close to 2 hours on the phone to Apple tech support on Friday. After a good 30mins trouble shooting/various operations (All of which I had already tried) with the initial chap, I was then passed to a tech in Ireland (A very helpful soul). We tried creating a new user account and running messages via that, safe boot etc etc. He checked my Apple ID for any abnormalities (All checked out) and various other things until telling me he would do some investigative work and call me back. In just over an hour he returned the call and told me it was due to the logic board replacement and that he would need to request for my Apple ID to be "White-listed". This, he attempted to do there and then but for some reason couldn't process it. The call was finalised with him saying it would take 24hrs for this "White-listing" to take effect and that he would call me back with an update, however, in that time there could be a possibility that messages would start working again as normal. Either way, he would call me back. Think it is all to do with the macbook not pairing up my ID with the new hardware. So in theory, my ID needs resetting with the hardware (I think). I tried signing out and back in again this morning but there is still no joy.

One thing that was strange that I noticed was that when I go to Preferences in Messages - Details - then enter my Apple ID Password, View Account. Where it has the boxes to enter your Name and Password, the password boxes that have bullet points in there is one bullet point missing in my password length. I flagged this up with the tech and asked if there should be the same number of bullet points as characters in the password. He said yes. So I tried entering the password again, hit save and got red text reading "You must choose a password that you have not used in the past year". All very strange as I have always held the same password for my account and it works on other devices for messages, iCloud and everything related to Apple ID.

Oh and I also got an email after purchasing an album on iTunes (The first I've bought since logic board replacement) stating "Your Apple ID, XX@XX.com, was just used to purchase XX by Various Artists from the iTunes Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID."

Yeah, ok. I've only purchased on that for the last 5 years.

Anyway, I can only suggest you get onto tech support and hope they can sort it with this White list thing. I will post again with any updates. Hopefully this will be resolved for me today. I'm now on day 3 since the call.

Happy to say that my Messages is now back to normal and working fine. Going to level 2 on the phone and getting the white list/server reset done seems to have worked. Never got a call back or any further correspondence from Apple or techs but I just kept going to the app and trying. Didn't require a sign out/back in again. It just worked as it did before the logic board replacement.

Hope my findings/troubles helps anyone else in the future with this fault.

Also, many thanks to Ralph for his assistance along the way!

1. close iMessage on your Mac.

2. on your iphone, go to setting- Message, turn off iMessage. Then turn it on again.

(for some users, it will show you "waiting for activation....". it might take couples of hours to complete this process.

it's normal.. just be patient and leave the switch ON because if you turn it off, it will restart the activation process.)

3. after iMessage on iPhone get activated. open iMessage on OSX, it should work now..

I hope this works.

This just happened to me! I had the logic board replaced via AppleCare through the Apple Store and ever since then iMessage from the Mac has not worked.... EXCEPT WHEN IT MYSTERIOUSLY DID. I have screencaps of a few IM conversations with my husband where all the sends change from green to blue and it works for a little while...and then bam, it stops working again, all during which I changed NOTHING. Literally while IM'ing him it began to work, then quit working again. it's been a few weeks and twice this mysterious behavior came about.

All my other devices, phone, other macs, and my iPad all still work perfectly with iMessage. No amount of logging them all out, logging out Facetime also, etc... has fixed this. If there's some kind of a whitelisting problem wouldn't they know about it already? I guess I'll give tech support a call and hope they can do the reset that is necessary.

Cecilia -

Your experience matches my identically. I had the logic board replaced in my MBP on March 5th. Messages worked for the first day and then it just stopped working. FaceTime works fine, which apparently uses the same authentication/authorization server. After several calls with Apple, they came back with "Reinstall the operating system again." Everything else is working just fine and I have iMessage on my phone so I haven't taken the time to reinstall and then restore everything again. I've tried everything in this thread to get it working again so let me know if you come up with anything that doesn't require a reinstall/restore as I'm cynical that will actually fix it.

Well, I got on the phone with Apple support, they had me do all the same steps including rebooting in safe mode and creating a new user, logging out of everything and back in again, etc... everything short of a new system install because I'd already upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan earlier today. So they escalated me to another level of support, they had me jump through a few more hoops to eliminate a few more possibilities... and the latest thing they've told me is that it's being escalated again to "the engineers" who I will probably hear from Tuesday because of the holiday weekend. I'll post with whatever happens...!

Yep. Serial number is there and correct. Went through all that with support on the phone. They had me upgrade to Yosemite -- that didn't fix it either. Opening in Safe Mode didn't change the behavior, zapping the PRAM didn't fix it, creating a new user and logging in from scratch didn't work, etc. In fact the problem has gotten *worse* because before even if I couldn't send iMessages from the Mac I could still type SMS. Now the phone won't sync to the Mac at all in that when I go on the phone to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > and from there choose which computer to sync to, when I choose this one where the logic board was replaced, the box pops up on the phone saying "Enter the code shown on your Mac to allow iPhone text messages to also be sent and received on ___." But the code never appears on the Mac. Nothing pops up. This same behavior is also evident when I try to sync the password manager 1Password--the code that is supposed to pop up on the Mac screen never comes up.

And as of today latest deepening of the mystery is that in the Text Message Forwarding menu this mac is now listed there TWICE. That's new. And neither works.

Supposedly an engineer is supposed to call me by Tuesday.

Tuesday was the day the engineers were supposed to look at my problem and voila! iMessage began to work perfectly partway through the day. The next day I got a call from someone at Level 2 tech support to say I should call them. When I got his voice mail I said "Hi, so, everything is working now and I assume it's because I was right and that my apple ID had to be whitelisted on the server side and that's what engineering did, but call me to let me know, OK?" I got a call back today that said, "Just calling to let you know you were completely correct."

So that's solved. What's frustrating is that before that, none of the tech support people I talked to had ever heard of this happening and didn't know what I was talking about. So Apple hasn't documented this very well for them, unfortunately.

Thankfully it's all working for me now, though.

Ralph, thanks for your help! Reading this thread helped me put them on the right track!

Thanks Cecilia and Ralph!!

I did the same support process - went through the first and second level support: sharing my screen, deleting keys for the keyring, signing out of messages, etc etc. About an hour long process before they escalated to the engineers. Within 2 days it started working completely again. I never received a call back from support that the ticket has been closed, but everything seems to be working now for me.

For anyone else facing this issue - it's highly likely not something that you can fix on your Mac - just call through support, go through the channels and try to get it escalated past the senior level advisors to the engineering team.

Cheers.

I think I fixed this now so if it is the same problem this is what helped:

iPhone Settings -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding" then select your device that you want to send from and enable it

Somehow my mac and phone seemed to get unlinked to each each so I had to reauthorize my computer and phone to get imessages from each other

My old messages have not popped up yet but that may just take another restart of the imessage app on my computer. However, it was my boyfriend's number that it said was not registered to imessage and now it looks normal so problem fixed!

Here's what worked for me to fix non-registered numbers error message,

1. Go iPhone>Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

This resets your wi-fi connection and reboots your iPhone, so be prepared to “login” w your id and pw to your wi-fi.

2. Then go Settings>Messages and you should see “Text Message Forwarding” about 3 or 4 items down. Select this and make sure your registered Apple devices are switched to on.

On my iPhone there was a problem with disappearing options in the Messages menu--Note that this option for Text Messaging Forwarding WAS NOT AVAILABLE until I performed #1 above.

Here's how I fixed this, hope it works for you. In Settings on my iPhone, my option for "Text Message Forwarding" had disappeared. To check this, go to Settings, select "Messages" then scroll down to "Send Read Receipts" and if you don't see Text Message Forwarding right above or below it, you might have the same problem I did. (The Send Read Receipts serves only as a reference point, you don't change this.)

To get "Text Message Forwarding" to come back as an option, I had to reset my networks—which was not so complicated. You will need your passwords handy AFTER you do this in order to get back into your networks. Still in Settings, go back to General, scroll down to the bottom until you can select "Reset." Choose Reset, then choose "Reset Network Settings." At this point I had to wait for my iPhone to restart, waiting, waiting.

Once your iPhone is back on, go to Settings > Messages —and you should see the option for "Text Message Forwarding." Select this option and you should see your Mac as an option for message forwarding. Make sure the Mac option is switched on.

This worked for me. I don't have in-depth knowledge of why it worked or other options, so I can't answer other questions about it. Hope it works for you too.
