When I type a contact to send an iMessage to from my mac, it turns red and says "message could not be sent, contact is not registered with iMessage"

A couple of my friends and I all experienced the same outage on the 9th of September. We assumed it had to do with the University wifi which was causing other device problems. I have disproved this on a few occasions by tethering my Mac to my iPhone 5's cellular internet and the problem remained unresolved. I hope this helps direct the search for the answer.

I am also having this same problem and I know of at least one other classmate that has the issue. We both believe it started some time around Sept 9, which coincidentally was the same day the iPhone 6 and iWatch was announced. I also took my mac to the Apple Store and similarly got bumped up to an engineer and am currently awaiting a reply from the "higher-ups" who were supposedly sent a data capture of the problem. This seems like a large problem with Apple devices so hopefully they address it soon.

I've been having the same issue for about a week and half. I've read all kids of these forums on different sites and no one knows how to fix this. I've never seen on report about trying something and it working for anyone. Grrrrr, this is so frustrating. I recently switched to Mac and Apple because I've always been told Apple is so much better and that everything just works. I guess not, please keep me posted if anyone fixes this thing.

I have the same issue started on the same day Sept 9th. Thought it was caused by the Southwest wifi.... still unresolved. Senior Apple care person told me to upgrade my iPad Air to iOS 8 as they thought that would fix it... it didn't.

iPhone 5S running 7.1.2 - iMessage works perfect

MacBook Air running 10.9.4 - iMessage lets me log in but EVERYONE is not registered so I can't send or recieve

iPad Air running 7.1.2 - iMessage lets me log in but EVERYONE is not registered so I can't send or recieve

iPad Air running iOS 8 (upgraded today) - iMessage lets me log in but EVERYONE is not registered so I can't send or recieve

I've been following threads on this issue for a while now because it has been affecting my late 2012 13 inch retina macbook as well. I have tried almost every solution I could find online along with talking to apple senior reps and having the apple engineers look into my problem.

Here is a little background knowledge on my situation. I was using my macbook on my university wifi. The wifi at school had problem and went out for 10 minutes or so. Upon reconnecting, my iMessage was not working and has not worked since. Like I said above, I have talked to numerous apple tech guys and tried many potential solutions and all have failed.

Today, I was able to get my mac to sync to my iPhone't sent messages. This is a very complicated and confusing situation to explain via text so I will try my best to be clear.

I was uploading a file to my dropbox account from my macbook. While my macbook was uploading, I was on my iphone sending iMessages. I noticed that while my computer was in the process of uploading, the messages that I sent from my phone were syncing to my computer. For example, if I were to send Frank a message saying "Hello" from my phone, he would receive the message and my macbook would show that a message saying "Hello" was sent to Frank. Also, when Frank began to type his response I would see the cloud icon with the "..." indicating to me that he is typing. But, when he sent the message, it only went to my phone and not my macbook. If I try to message that person directly from my macbook it fails.

This experience today helped explain a previous occurence I had when the problem first appeared. The first day my iMessages stopped working, I was advised to reinstall Mavericks OSX. To back up my files I used airdrop to transfer my files to another mac. During this upload process, I was sending iMessages from my phone and my macbook was syncing the sent messages from my iPhone. Basically it was doing the Hello Fred example I gave above. Exactly like it was doing today while I uploaded a file to dropbox. These 2 occurrences lead me to think there is definitely some type of correlation here that might help someone with more knowledge figure out a solution.

I was only able to achieve this result while uploading files from my macbook. For weeks before today I was not able to get any aspect of iMessage to work on my computer. Now, my sent messages are syncing to my macbook even when I am not uploading. I have quit and restarted the messages app as well as restarted my computer and my computer is still showing and syncing to the messages I send via my iPhone. I do not know what exactly about sending a message while uploading a file made the sync work. All I know is that it did something.

Yes! That example you gave is the exact problem I'm having. When Messages first cut out, I was using Mavericks, and none of my messages were being synced. Then I updated to Yosemite Beta to try to fix it, and that's when my "sent" messages began syncing. I guess we just have to wait until Apple comes out with a fix? I wonder how many people are having this problem, if it's large enough to get Apple's attention.

I have been fighting this problem since the 9th of Sept as well! What's going on? I did also download Yosemite Beta, but on a partition, and I only had it running for about an hour and then went back to Mavericks. It has to be Yosemite screwing this up! Is there any response from the Beta team yet?

I have tried all of the logging out and in again on all the devices, but to no avail. 😟

Come on Apple, do us proud and fix this. ;-)

Just an update to the seeming hopelessness of this situation.

I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 7, an iPad 2 with iOS 7 and an iMac with Mavericks (OS X 10.9.5).

All three of these have sent and received all messages for a year now. Suddenly, on Sept. 9, it all broke. My Phone continues to work fine, but the other two will not receive nor will they send. (I am only trying to send to other Apple devices).

Several times I have logged out and in again from iMessage, even reseting my Network settings on the iPad per one suggestion. Nothing.

Again, I just now logged out of iMessage and FaceTime on all 3 devices, then back in again starting with m y iPhone. As I logged on thru my iPad, my iPhone received notices saying that the iPad had connected to my account. Then when I logged on thru my iMac, both my iPhone and my iPad received notices saying that the Mac had connected to my account.

So it is clear that they are connecting to the server in some fashion, but still not sending nor receiving of iMessages. )FaceTime does work though).

The only thing out of the ordinary that I did was to partition my drive on the Mac and install the Yosemite Beta. I logged into my account on Yosemite, used it briefly and then closed it, rebooted to Mavericks and continued on. I did not realize that the problem with iMessage had started until several days later when I looked at my iPad and noticed a few messages had failed.

Could logging into my Apple ID thru Yosemite have screwed this all up? (Incidentally I did NOT start using iCloud Drive was I know that would have broken things in the cloud).

I hope that someone who reads these posts will have an idea about what we can do.

Thank you.

I'm also having this problem, and my girlfriend is as well with her Mac and Ipad. We have both tried everything listed in this thread with no success. We are also college students, but live off campus and doesn't work there either. I have forgotten all networks connected to the Campus and as said before, done EVERYTHING listed above, as well as the contact card part. My girlfriend also took her stuff to Apple store not long ago, and they didn't even know what she was talking about and pretty much blew off her question and request because her Macbook Pro is still under warranty... I'll be following this thread in hope that it is fixed. Mine also has been out for about the same time frame everyone else has. And I hope Apple focuses on one of their main apps and gets this fixed because this is BEYOND aggravating.

Edited* Neither of us have the Yosemite Beta.

Update to my situation: today (9/27), around noon, I was surfing the web on my Mac when I received the roughly 2500 messages that had been exchanged over the last 18 days since the Message-pocalypse began on 9/9. Messages proceeded to work for several hours on my Mac until just now, when I awoke my Mac from sleep mode. All contacts are red again. There is hope. We can do this.
