Although you can upgrade just one step, to Leopard (10.5.8), that system is now well out of date and isn't supported; the next step, Snow Leopard, requires an Intel processor.

There are those who would argue that Tiger is in many ways a better system than Leopard and you would be better off sticking with it; but either way you will find that a lot of websites don't work properly, quite apart from potential security risks.

After nine years you may want to start thinking about a new Mac. An up to date Mac with Mavericks will give you a speed improvement that you will find remarkable.

Steve...

Regarding Roger's comment, I cannot compare Leopard to Tiger from experience, I too am running a vintage Mac (older and slower than yours) with Tiger. It runs PhotoShop just as well as it ever did. Browsing the web had been a bit frustrating though .... until TenFourFox (10.4.Firefox - get it?). It is totally PowerPC native and runs like rocket ship - with NO issues - compared to Safari and mozilla's Firefox for Tiger.

Take the 10.4Foxv31.1.0 tour here and you decide http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Max out your memory and Disk space. (be sure of your vendor)

You may want to take the advice to buy a new Mac, since it will become increasingly frustrating as time goes by.

Cost / Benefit analysis seems in order.

Steve, Like CCC, I also run TenFourFox (TFF) on a G4 with Tiger. I learned a couple of things:

) If you want to run Flash hacks, you can't use any TFF version higher than v17, available in the archives section of the TFF site. Latter version acannot use plug-ins regardless of how nicely you speak to them. You can run FireFox extensions and themes.

2) The "tattltale" nature of many sites--like connecting to Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Google, etc, even if you don't use those services---is NOT PowerPC friendly and was representing the biggest roadblock to my surfing with TFF. I found a series of FireFox extensions called Disconnect that mostly --not always--prevent those behind-the-scenes snooping connections and that made TFF a more than acceptable browser for

I was saving the drawbacks 104F til after you expressed your preference (stick w/ Tiger or go new) -- Allan is right about SocialMedia and the lack of support for "Plug-ins" - QT, Flash, etc. - but, the WebWildWorld is gonna go with HTML5 soon anyway and no browser will support 'em - I find more sites every day that work fine in 104Fv31.1. My particular workaround for QT is an "Extension" that will download a movie to play in QT7. That really doesn't matter much though since H.264 codec slams my Mac anyway. Flash is handled by simply copy the URL and paste it into Safari for that instance - not often but effective for me. I partake of "Continuing Education" stuff - Aquent Gymnasium and WorldScienceU using Safari as well.

Let me add a term Cost / HASSLE / Benefit analysis...

Side note: used to be Apple pushing change on the world, didn't it?

continued luck

104Fv31.1 is about as secure as you can get (I think) -- it is on par with latest Mozilla FireFox for all platforms. Biggest security issue was with Flash Plug-In, so much so that Adobe AND Apple sandboxed it late last year. Adobe seems reticent to update it - Why? HTML5! Waste of time when all browsers will be able to play the content when the Content Creators get with the program - HTML5 that is. QT will have to adapt as well. no word on that though.

GoTo http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ and then use your browser's Find function for the text " So make the jump and keep your Power Mac relevant. " -- The links for various processors are listed about 65% down the page. But.... for your convenience

Just wanna make sure you have all the linkages. 😎

Thanx for the additional helpie but really not necessary 😊
