Q: Mavericks - Blue screen on startup

Starting my MacBook Pro running Mavericks gives me a 'Blue Screen'.

Starting using Cmd-R does not give me the option to use Internet Recovery and eventually gives a 'blue screen' (sometimes grey)

Starting using Opt gives me the choice of 'Macintosh HD' and 'Recovery-10.9.3' - both choices give me a blue (or grey) screen

Starting using 'Shift' displays a progress bar, which completes, and then gives a 'blue screen' (sometimes grey)

Starting using Cmd-S gives me a :/ root# prompt

After running fsck -fy twice I get the message:

'** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.'

typing 'exit' to attempt a re-boot gives a 'blue screen' (sometimes grey)

I have tried resetting NVRAM and PRAM

I have tried resetting SMC

Help! Where do I go next?

Does you Mac qualify for internet recovery and did you install the firmware update required for internet recovery booting as described in this Apple document: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery

I have used internet recovery in the past on the same machine and installed Lion and then Mavericks that way. Could that capability get disabled somehow?

I have tried all of the options in that list that were possible. All I can get to work is the sequence:

Starting using Cmd-S gives me a :/ root# prompt

What couldn't you get to work?

Attempting to start the machine using Cmd-R, Opt or Shift all result in a blue screen.
The only start option which gets me anywhere is Cmd-S.
I have tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM and SMC and this has not changed the situation.

Followed these instructions in single user mode:

# Execute the following commands: /sbin/fsck -fy / /sbin/mount -uw / mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* . mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* . touch /System/Library/Extensions exit

And machine booted OK - graphics are good enough for the time being - I will follow up on this post:

I have the exact same issue, ending with '** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.' at the same step you did.
I'm trying to execute the solution you pasted, but when I type:
/sbin/fsck -fy /

I'm getting this answer

fsck usage: fsck [-fdnypq] [-l number]

I googled that but I still don't have a clue.

I'm not a big terminal expert: Do you have an idea of what I should do ?

ok, nevermind

I tried again of couple of times ans I managed to apply the exact same procedure and BAM, my macbook showed me the login screen and I'm in now.

Thanks a lot man, I thought I would have to replace the Motherboard or something

Squanto99,

I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro not more than a day ago. Here's a thread were I got an answer: MacBook Pro (15", Late 2011) Start-up troubles

In short, it turns out that the GPU soldering is faulty and after taking my MBP in for service Apple told me I'd need to replace the logic board. Apparently this is due to overheating issues and lack of ventilation.
