How can I remove parental controls? PLEASE HELP!

I just got my Mac-Mini, and sometimes when I want to do something on it, A screen with 'parental controls' pops up, and I have to enter a password, which I don't know. I've asked my parents if they did this, but they didn't! And after an hour, my Mac says: Your time is over, to add an extra hour, enter your password. How can I remove it? It's very annoying because I can't even go to Facebook, or Youtube.

So this happened to me too and I fixed it. You will have to change the password and undo it:

  • Turn off computer
  • 2. Press on button + Command R until you see the apple logo
  • 3. go to utilities > terminal
  • 4. Type resetpassword and then press the enter button.
  • 5. Then press the Macintosh HD or globe icon etc (I think it only works with those two)
  • 6. Select your administrator account (try with all accounts the ones ur sure it probably is. I'm not sure which one it is).
  • 7. enter the new password you wanna put in
  • 8. Press Save < OK
  • 9. Shut down and turn on computer
  • 10. Go to system preferences > parental controls
  • 11. AND BAM!!!

You stated: "I just got my Mac-Mini"; could you explain that further?

Did you get it from your parents? If so, where did they get it?

Was it bought for you by your parents from a third party? If so, it should have been fully erased and a clean install of the OS installed so that it would look to be a new computer to you.

You have not provided enough information for a cogent answer.

The parents, if the mini were ever used officially by them and had any software

installed, bought music, updated the system, etc, would've used their Apple ID.

So, if through legitimate sources and correctly set-up, or if bought used and set

up with the new owner's information, installed new OS X, and etc, it would have

an Admin account or be accessible by the owner's Apple ID.

Before using suggested links to change an unknown Admin access password,

be sure to check, because if this unit has seen any software update, iTunes,

App Store or Mac App Store access, someone has an account and it may be

that would alter how the computer was used by them, if you change it now.

Also, to update or upgrade System software, and most online store access, does

require a valid payment card to be entered. If the parents are a party to this use,

then seems to reason, they should be in on what to change the new password to.

Good luck & happy computing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Or you could just go into System Preferences through the Apple in the upper left hand corner, choose parental controls and fixed the issue. You will need the admin password if your user is not an admin account.

To change a admin password

(before the computer is on) Turn on your computer while holding COMMAND+R until you see select language, then choose utilities from the very top (a few words right from OS X Utilities), the terminal... type resetpassword no spaces and no caps and press enter... then you will have the password reset box. Choose the mac hd or hard drive icon, then user volume (select what user you want to reset the password fro), the type and retype a password (no restrictions), then save.

Restart your computer and when the keychain error asks what you want to do choose the middle option Create New Keychain.

next time you go into the forums you may want to forget to hint that there is a chance your parents are limiting you.

Hope that helps

Thanks everyone for your help! The problem was that my dad accidentally turned on parental controls, without knowing.

My mom had this Mac before me, so her account was the admin and with her password I turned the controls off.

I found this out myself, my parents aren't that good with Apple ๐Ÿ˜

For everyone who's wondering: I am 14 years old, and a girl.

Thanks a lot for all of your help!

And before changing the Admin user password, if the computer is owned by an

adult parent, and the user doing so is an child who is not authorized to do so by

the parent, this action is not to be taken lightly. Much of the adult's household

and fiscal items may be in jeopardy when the accounts are mucked around with.

Just saying, that may be good answer for someone. But not the best answer if admin

user is owner & is an adult, and does not want their main content or privacy invaded.

Good luck in this matter! ๐Ÿ™‚
