My ATV 2 has frozen now for a couple of weeks, thought it may be the remote so changed the battery. Then went online and was advised to hold menu and rewind buttons together for 6 secs...nothing happened. the white light flashes at the beginning and then stay on and is unresponsive.
I am about to smash it up...please advise.

You've already tried the 'unpaid remote' sequence which can help if AppleTV for some reason thinks another remote is controlling it, but it seems it wasn't that.
I think you'd be best restoring it using a USB to microUSB cable connected to a computer running iTunes, see:

If that doesn't work/help, and it's under warranty get Apple or store you bought from to replace it.
