Q: iPhone 5s is synced with computer but doesnt factory unlock?

I have an iPhone 5s that is factory locked and I want to unlock it.So I hooked it up to the computer and the phone synced.It asked whether I wanted to set it up as a new phone which I then clicked yes.Then when I clicked yes,my iPhone showed up on iTunes with my ios version and etc. but an error message comes up saying"The iPhone could not be activated because the activation information was invalid.Please try again later".I have tried unplugging and plugging in my iPhone to no avail and also I have stopped and restarted the apple mobile device service to no avail.I also restarted my computer which didn't work.What should I do?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

Only the carrier to which it is locked can unlock it.

You cannot unlock your iPhone yourself...only the carrier the iPhone is locked to can unlock it. You will have to contact the carrier and work with their policies and procedures for getting it unlocked. Apple does not get involved in doing that.

What does this have to do with it?

Verizon must unlock the iPhone. Have you asked verizon if the iPhone is unlocked?

I thought that the way to unlock iphones is that if you entered the sim card that the phone belongs ex: Verizon phone,verizon sim card, it would automatically unlock.That's what happened with my other iPhone.

You insert the sim card of the carrier the iPhone is locked to so you can activate the iPhone. To unlock you must get the carrier to send the unlock signal so you can then use iTunes to unlock it for use with another carrier. Only the carrier can do that.
