Mail stopped working suddenly on iPad

I Have read lots of posts for similar types of problem as mine today. Most of them all relate to something which either the user has done by, changed ie password etc. or something the server provider has changed and the solution has been to go check everything and reinstall.

I have been sitting here getting and sending emails for about 2 hours. At 14:20 I wondered why I had not received a reply from another person, so I went into Mail and was eventually given a message saying that Mail could not be got because the server was not responding. I have various accounts ranging from BT, TalkTalk to 123-reg mail servers. I can get no mail from any of them, so it is not a password issue. The information given at the bottom of the lefthand column is 'updated 01:25pm' - it is now 03:14pm and still no sign of any mail.

I Have not done anything to any settings - what else can be the problem?

iPad, iOS 7.0.4

Try closing the Mail app via the iPad’s multitasking bar and then re-open it and see if any new emails download : double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Mail app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.

If that doesn't fix then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Thanks for responding King_Penguin, unfortunately neither of these two things worked. The two suggestions you made are things I now do automatically when anything goes wrong, I even do what some others have suggested, switching off wifi, then selecting airplane mode for about 30 seconds before I do both of your suggestions - but none of these worked. The strange thing is, I was able to go online and type this question, so it wasn't my wifi signal and I had been getting emails up until 1:25 which was the last time an update was recorded. I did nothing to any settings. I also discovered that my iPhone was giving the same message. Unfortunately, I wasn't near my works computer to check if the emails were getting through to it - but I'm sure they will be - this kind of thing is a regular occurrence with iPad & iPhone so the only conclusion I can come to is that it is something to do with updates, because I have both of these devices set to automatically update whenever I enter a wifi zone, the desktop computer only gets updated when I say so.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
